‭Abstract:‬
I‭ n this experiment, we had to use SolidWorks to do a static analysis on both a link and a hanger.‬
‭Both the link and hanger are made up of chrome stainless steel and they both go under various‬
‭boundary conditions. For the static analysis of a link, the link has two pin supports in the two end‬
‭holes and has a force acting downward in the center hole of 30000 N. For this analysis, the main‬
‭focuses are to determine symmetric boundary conditions, prevent rigid body motions, and to‬
‭determine the limitations of the small displacement theory. Preventing rigid body motions is‬
‭important for this experiment because if there’s rigid body motion on the link, there would be an‬
‭uneven distribution of stress on the link.‬

‭ or the static analysis of a hanger, the back of the hanger has a fixed restraint where there is a‬
F
‭1000 N load force applied to the blue face. For this analysis, interactions are important while‬
‭conducting the analysis. Having a bonded interaction would evenly distribute the stress being‬
‭applied on the hanger while the free interaction doesn’t evenly distribute the stress along the‬
‭hanger.‬
‭Introduction:‬
‭ he purpose of the static analysis of a link experiment is to conduct a basic FEA on the link to‬
T
‭find the displacements and stresses on the link using half the link and the full link. The two ends‬
‭of the link have a pin support and the middle section of the link undergoes a force of 30000 N.‬
‭Small displacements were prevented on the link due to the link’s boundary conditions. Since the‬
‭link has a pin support, the pin support restricted movement in all directions except rotational‬
‭movement. This would prevent the rigid body motion on the link and help satisfy equilibrium on‬
‭the link.‬

‭ he purpose of the static analysis of a hanger experiment was to identify how the three‬
T
‭interactions (contact, bonded, and free) affect the hanger’s stress and displacement. It's important‬
‭to use these three interactions for this experiment because different interactions influence how‬
‭loads are distributed throughout the structure.‬
‭Theoretical Background:‬
‭ or the static analysis of a link, preventing rigid body motions is important. Preventing rigid‬
F
‭body motions is significant in this experiment because this helps to ensure that the link is stable‬
‭while undergoing different types of loads. Rigid body motion can also prevent the stress to be‬
‭uniformly distributed along the link which would result in failure of the structure.‬

‭ or the static analysis of a hanger, implementing the three types of interactions were crucial to‬
F
‭this analysis. According to Engineering Analysis with SolidWorks, the manual states “Contact‬
‭interaction allows gaps to form within the structure but prevents interference between the source‬
‭and target. In bonded interactions, the source and target entities are bonded. For free interactions,‬
‭the selected faces are disjoint and can freely go through each other with no interaction” (pg 186,‬
‭4‬

‭ urowski). These interactions are crucial for this analysis to properly analyze the stress and‬
K
‭displacement of the structure to determine the safety of the hanger.‬

‭Discussion of Results:‬
‭ tatic Analysis of a Link:‬
S
‭After conducting the analysis on the link, the results were pretty accurate. The experiment was‬
‭conducted using half the link and using the full link. Using half the link and the full link had‬
‭produced accurate results. Looking at Figures 4 and 12, the displacements are different but‬
‭almost the same. Figure 4 has a displacement of 0.280 mm and Figure 12 has a displacement of‬
‭0.268 mm. This is because of the boundary conditions of the link. If the boundary conditions are‬
‭similar to each other using both a half link and a full link, the behavior of how the link acts under‬
‭load will be consistent resulting in similar displacement values.‬

‭ tatic Analysis of a Hanger:‬

S
‭After conducting the analysis on the hanger, the results were pretty accurate compared to the‬
‭manual. The type of interaction that is chosen for the analysis has a great influence on the stress‬
‭and displacement of the hanger. Figure 22 and 23 shows the stress and displacement of the‬
‭hanger under a bonded interaction. The stress in a bonded interaction is more uniformly‬
‭distributed across the surface. Using this type of interaction helps determine different types of‬
‭failure modes. Figure 24 and 25 shows the stress and displacement of the hanger under a free‬
‭interaction. The stress in a free interaction is more complex since the load isn’t evenly distributed‬
‭along the hanger. The stress is localized with this type of interaction and is more likely to fail‬
‭since the stress isn’t distributed along the hanger.‬
‭Conclusion:‬
‭ o conclude, the experiment was a success. For both analyses, I obtained accurate and expected‬
T
‭results. For the static analysis of a link, using both the half link and full link would produce‬
‭similar displacements since the boundary conditions of both are similar to each other. Preventing‬
‭rigid body motions is significant in this experiment because the link is stable while undergoing‬
‭different types of loads. Rigid body motion prevents the structure from having localized stress so‬
‭the structure won’t fail. For the static analysis of a hanger, each interaction had a relationship‬
‭with how the hanger behaved. The purpose of using the three interactions was to see which‬
‭interaction type is appropriate in determining the stress and displacement of the structure to‬
‭determine the performance and safety of the structure.‬
