Name Class Date

1 Use words from the box to complete the sentences correctly. Not all the words will be used.

burn flames hot fire extinguisher wet wood

(a) To light a bonfire, you need to make the wood very hot .
(1)

(b) We can tell when the wood starts to burn, because we can see flames .
(1)

(c) To put the fire out, we can use a fire extinguisher .

2 Draw lines to link each of the words on the left with its meaning shown on the right.

1 combustion 4 a reaction when a substance combines

with oxygen

2 fuel 3 a substance made of only hydrogen and

carbon

3 hydrocarbon 2 a substance containing stored energy

that can be released during burning

3 The apparatus shown below is used to show what happens during the combustion of a
hydrocarbon fuel.

(a) Tick one box to complete each sentence in parts (i), (ii) and (iii) below.
(i) The thermometer will show that during the experiment the temperature:

A decreases

x B increases

C stays the same

D varies

(1)

(ii) The blue cobalt chloride paper will change to pink because:

x A water is being produced.

B oxygen is being produced.

C carbon dioxide is being produced.

D heat is being produced.

(iii) The limewater will change from clear to:

A pink

B blue

C dark

x D cloudy

(1)

(b) Describe how anhydrous copper sulfate could be used as an alternative test for water in this
experiment.

The anhydrous copper sulfate will turn from white to blue if only water is present and that is
another alternative for testing water.

4 A tea light is a type of candle. The diagram shows apparatus used to investigate the effect of
the height of a candle on the time taken before the candle goes out.

(a) (i) Which is the independent variable in the experiment? Tick one box.

x A height of candle

B the material of the container

C size of container

D time taken for candle to go out

(ii) Which is the dependent variable in the experiment? Tick one box.

A height of candle

B the material of the container

C size of container

x D time taken for candle to go out

(1)

(c) Give a reason why the other variables need to be controlled.

The other variables need to be controlled in order to be a fair test and to have accurate results.
(1)

(d) Choose one of the control variables and suggest how it could be controlled.
The container must be the same so the temperature of the candle inside

doesn't change and that can happen by making sure the material of the container is exactly the same.

5 The diagram shows an incomplete fire triangle.

(a) What is the missing word on the triangle? Oxygen

(1)

(b) Explain what the fire triangle shows.

The fire triangle shows the three factors needed to produce fire.
(1)

(c) Explain how water helps to put out a fire.

Water helps to put out fire by cooling down the heat in the fire.

(d) Explain why you should not use water on burning oil.
You should not use water on burning oil because if you do so the water will change into
water vapour which is stron and will push the fire causing it to spread more rather than reducing it.

6 (a) Name the product formed when magnesium metal burns in air.
Magnesium oxide.

(1)

(b) Write a word equation for this reaction.

Magnesium + Oxygen (react to make) Magnesium oxide.
(1)

(c) What happens to the mass of reactants and mass of products in this reaction? Tick one box.

A The mass of the products is more than the mass of the reactants.

B The mass of the products is less than the mass of the reactants.

x C The mass of the products is the same as the mass of the reactants.

D The mass of the products is not comparable with the mass of the reactants.

7 Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are pollutants produced from the combustion of fossil
fuels. Other pollutants are also produced.
(a) (i) Name one non-metal oxide pollutant produced from the combustion of an impurity in fossil
fuels.
Sulfur dioxide.
(1)

(ii) Name one non-metal oxide pollutant produced by the high temperature inside a vehicle
engine when the engine is burning fossil fuels.

Nitrogen oxide.

(b) Explain how the combustion of fossil fuels can cause acid rain.

Combustion of fossil fuels may cause acidic rain because some fuels contain sulfur so when the fuel

is burnt the sulfur will be released to the air and reacts with oxygen to form sulfur dioxide and then
reaching to the clouds and dissolve in it so when there is rain the rain will be acidic and damage the
plants and soil. (2)

(c) Explain how carbon monoxide is produced in a car engine.

Carbon monoxide is produced in a car engine by incomplete combustion where there is no

enough oxygen to react with all the carbon atoms, so some will be released as soot and the rest
as carbon monoxide.
(2)

(d) Explain how the amount of carbon monoxide released into the air from a car exhaust can
be reduced.

The amount of the carbon monoxide released into the air can be reduced by having the

catalytic converter inside the car, so the carbon monoxide will enter and react with more oxygen
being released in the air as carbon dioxide which is less harmful.
(2)

(e) Explain why the carbon dioxide produced from the combustion of fossil fuels is a problem
for the climate.

Carbon dioxide produced from the combustion of fossil fuels is a problem for the climate because

carbon dioxide is friendly in making the environment much more warmer by increasing the amount
of greenhouse gases and increasing global warming problem.
