FPT SUPPLIES THE MOJO FOR MOJO

M
ojo is another exemplary example of the Profab 1200 power
catamaran out of Profab Engineering of Palmerston North.
The design comes from the drawing board of designer Roger
Hill, well known and respected for providing high performance
and efficient hull designs paired with well-considered interior layouts.
The 12m design features asymmetrical hulls and on this example,
a hydrofoil provides additional lift to reduce drag allowing for greater
performance and economy. The construction and assembly are
exceptional and all vessel systems have been well considered, positioned,
and executed.
Stepping onto the teak sole of the cockpit and moving inside, the
muted colours and superb interior finishes provide the feeling of luxury
and comfort. This is a boat where function and form meet up with style.
The Profab 1200 is the ideal 12m vessel for anyone desiring a high
performance and stable platform suitable for economic long-range
passages as well as high speed cruising. Mojo is fitted with twin FPT N60
400hp common-rail diesel engines – an ideal choice for fuel efficiency,
performance and value.

ith more than 300 boats displayed in 2024, and
even more expected on the marinas for the 2025
show, the Auckland Boat Show will be the key
summer boating event next year.
The Show returns to central Auckland’s Jellicoe Harbour
from 6-9 March 2025, where it will showcase all things boating.
Tickets go on sale in November for the event.
The annual show acts as a new release hub for New
Zealand’s marine companies as they showcase their innovative
products and leading vessels.
The volume of new releases at the show attracts large
crowds. In 2024 the show featured New Zealand debuts of
boats built in Spain, Norway, the United States, the United
Kingdom, France, Italy, Finland and Australia, along with a huge
proportion of newly-built New Zealand boats.
Alongside boats, the 2025 show will feature plenty of
exhibitors showcasing the best of boating lifestyle, including
Land & Sea and non-profit organisation LegaSea.
Sea trials are a crucial component of the event. With the

It came as the Code Zero unfurled

For a sailing aficionado starved of delicious daysailers like

make the hull sail well. With the Saffier, it’s the other way around – the
correct way around, arguably – because performance is never wasted.
Not too many performance boats offer the Saffier’s level of
quality and luxury. The ‘SE’ in its name stands for speed and
elegance, so I could barely wait to jump aboard and see if it lived up
to its label.

DIAMOND CUT
Dutch-owned Saffier Yachts has an interesting backstory, helmed
by the Hennevanger family who built Santana cruising yachts in
Sydney in the 1960s.
Saffiers are an entirely different beast, and the company is now
the world’s largest manufacturer of high-end daysailers. They are
also a recipient of multiple European Yacht of the Year awards,
including for the SE 33 Life in 2022.
Its symbol is a diamond, and the level of finish is certainly
polished. Structural components, for example, are glassed in, while
the hull is foam core and vacuum infused with a carbon-strengthened
deck. The production time for each boat is up to four months.
White is the standard gelcoat finish, but coloured hulls are
a Saffier trademark. Our test boat looked radiant in azure-blue,
complemented by teak-style Esthec decking and mustard-coloured
upholstery.

Not too many

level of quality and
luxury.

The colours were personally chosen by Peter Hrones, the Director

of Eyachts, who saw Saffier as a good fit for his boutique, family-
run dealership, Carbon Yachts. Indeed, Peter didn’t just secure
importation rights, he bought the test boat for his own private use.
It would be difficult to find a better boat for Pittwater, Port Phillip,
or any waterway where twilight and pointscore racing are popular.

DECK LAYOUT
What sets a day-sailer apart from floating apartments is the cockpit,
and the 33 is a triumph of ergonomics, simplicity and functionality.
Indeed, the execution is obsessively clean, borrowing from European
superyacht thinking.
It begins with a retractable swimladder housed in a transom
recess so as not to visually intrude. Next is an aft sunpad where you
can sip a drink or sit away from the sheet-pulling action – just watch
out for the traveller.

Continuing the clean theme, the track for the self-tacking
jib is recessed, as is the headsail furler. The foredeck hatch is
also flush, the cleats are retractable, and the anchor system is
foldable. Finally, there is a carbon bowsprit, standard on boats
coming here.

CRUISING TOUCHES
With Pittwater offering protected bays for a Sunday sail, the
SE 33’s cockpit is also ideal for socialising, having an optional
cockpit fridge and dinette table. For a nap or sleepover, the
open-plan cabin offers sitting headroom, berths for two adults
and two children, an enclosed head, and a compact galley.
Topside windows afford extra light.

That sinking feeling

So, what should you do if the unthinkable happens and your boat starts sinking
beneath you? Here are a few suggestions from the experts.

ariner Insurance’s Aaron Mortimer has some

M useful advice on what to do should you ever find

yourself in a sinking situation.
Secure your life jacket or PFD
Your safety is paramount. If everyone on board
is not already wearing a life jacket or Personal Flotation Device
(PFD), now is the time to get it on.

Address the breach

Use bungs made of rubber or wood to plug holes in the hull.
These are available in various sizes at your local chandlery and
you should consider carrying these on board your boat at all
times.
If the hole is just below the waterline, try shifting weight around Use flares
the boat to lift it above the waterline for a temporary fix. Flares are effective signalling devices. Check them regularly to
Make a distress call ensure they are not expired.
Use your VHF radio to call for help on channel 16. Activate your EPIRB or PLB beacon
If you don’t have a VHF radio, use your cell phone to dial *500 In cases where other communication methods fail, activate
for Coast Guard assistance or 111 in emergencies. your Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or
Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) to send a distress signal.
Stay with your vessel
If water continues to rise despite using bilge pumps and bailing
with buckets, stay with your vessel as long as it remains afloat.
This makes it easier for rescuers to find you.
Avoid swimming to shore
Do not attempt to swim to shore unless you are wearing a life
jacket and are confident in your ability to make the trip. Your boat
provides buoyancy and visibility that swimming alone cannot.

We hope you never need to use these tips, but being

prepared can make all the difference when facing
maritime emergencies. BNZ

Following weeks of intense competition, Ineos Britannia secured the opportunity to

stakeholders were in for a real treat.

CARDS FLIPPED
The first round-robin of the challengers’ series, which also included
the Emirates Team New Zealand (their matches didn’t count towards
the final score), took place just a few days after the preliminary
regatta. The French team, Orient Express Racing, started fiercely
and, against everyone’s expectations, beat Alinghi Red Bull Racing
and stole an important first point from them. The Swiss then lost to
all other teams as well, ending the first week of the competition at
the very bottom of the leaderboard.
Whoever was expecting that New York Yacht Club’s American
Magic would defeat Ineos Britannia without much effort, and
there were many, were fooling themselves. In very light wind, the
Americans dropped off the foils just before the start, crossing far
behind the British team. However, they sailed exceptionally well and
caught up at the finish but ran out of racetrack to lose a point.
Ineos Britannia secured another point against Emirates
Team New Zealand. At the end of the first day of competition
the crane lifting the Kiwi boat malfunctioned, dropping Taihoro.
Fortunately, the shore team had already placed a cradle under the
boat, preventing it falling to the ground and sustaining irreparable
damage. The team worked tirelessly to put the boat back on the
water, with Emirates Team New Zealand only missing one day of
racing and losing a point to the British team.
After their forced day off, the Kiwis returned to racing even
stronger, defeating all the teams to finish the first round-robin at the
top of the leaderboard tied on points with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.
Ineos Britannia was third, followed by American Magic and Orient
Express Racing, with Alinghi Red Bull Racing in last place.

FLUKEY CONDITIONS
The second round-robins started with rather adverse weather and
only two races were completed on the first day. When an unexpected
storm developed and lightning struck the water near Emirates Team
New Zealand and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli mid-race, further racing
was cancelled for the day.
The return of sunshine was accompanied by light winds. The
Alinghi Red Bull Racing team started this round much better, first
with a win over the French and then over the Americans.
American Magic proved to be the most vulnerable in the light
conditions. The team won the first race against Ineos Britannia
after the Brits made a mistake, and then lost to the Swiss. The rest
of the week didn’t go as planned for the Americans either. They
won the match against the French, securing a spot in the semifinals
of the Louis Vuitton Cup, but after the boat returned to the dock,
co-helmsman Paul Goodison fell into the cockpit while lowering
the mainsail, breaking five ribs, putting him out of action for the
foreseeable future.

Goodison, a Brit, was replaced by Olympic medallist and
multiple world champion Lucas Calabrese. Terry Hutchinson,
skipper and president of sailing operations of the American
team, insisted that Calabrese was well-prepared and that the
change wouldn’t affect the team’s performance. However, LEFT British fans

In the final races of the second round-robins, the British
performed best of all. On Saturday, they first easily defeated BELOW American

Brits – with Sir Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher at the helms
– also excelled the following day in very light winds. First,
they easily defeated the French, and in the final race beat the
Italians once again.

The weather, wind strength, and particularly the sea state,

seem to be playing crucial roles in this year’s battle for the
America’s Cup. As Ainslie confirmed in an interview for Sail-
World, these conditions can contribute hugely to the results.
They would have been front of mind for all the teams from the
moment Barcelona was announced as the venue for the 37th
America’s Cup. “Everyone was doing their weather studies, and
we knew that it was going to be a tough place to design for,
because you get a range of conditions: flat water, strong winds,
light winds, a big sea state – you get it all and that is a real
challenge to design for,” said Ainslie.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

On the final day of the round-robins, the unthinkable
happened. There were a few different possible scenarios, and
the least expected of them prevailed. In the unlikely event that
the French team would win against Ineos Britannia, they would
have the same number of points as the Swiss, providing that
the latter lost against the Italians. That would mean these two
teams facing off in the final race for elimination – a situation
Alinghi Red Bull Racing had neither imagined nor wanted.
But as expected Orient Express Racing lost against the
British and so waved the fans and spectators goodbye. However
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli had some issues with one of its
hydrofoils, which caused the team to surrender the race against
the Swiss, losing an important point.
This brought a second unexpected scenario into play,
in which the Italians and the Brits were sitting on top of
the leaderboard, both with seven wins and three losses.
This required a sail-off between them for first place on the
leaderboard, won by Ineos Britannia.

The standings after two completed round-robins
mattered as they heavily affected the rest of the competition
for the Louis Vuitton Cup.
The winning team had an opportunity to pick its
opponent in the semi-finals and Ineos Britannia chose
Alinghi Red Bull Racing. This left Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli
to face off against American Magic.

On Monday, the sailing conditions were marginal with
the wind blowing 6-8 knots. The first race was won by the
Swiss, but only after both teams had ended up off the foils

Swiss really needed this point as the first team to win five

The wind strengthened slightly for the race between
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic. The
Americans, with a hand around their necks, came out
swinging. Lucas Calabrese, racing an AC75 for only his
third day, proved a fantastic foil to co-helmsman Tom
Slingsby. They sailed a near perfect race, forcing the Italians
into making errors and copping penalties. The Americans
crossed the line first to survive another day.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli had no reason to be nervous,
though, since they were still only one win away from the
final round of the competition. Nevertheless, Slingsby NEWPORT
reminded fellow Australian Jimmy Spithill at Luna Rossa’s
helm of his own words from 2013: “Imagine if these guys (8.5kG) 230 x 450mm grill area

TOWING
ine came around 30 years ago when

M
I was towing the family’s 6m cabin
boat to Lake Taupo’s western bays,
taking the back road from Te Awamutu
to Kinloch which involved negotiating
numerous steep hills.
My two-litre automatic Toyota Cressida was not the ideal
tow vehicle, which I found out on the first decent incline.
Cresting the top of the hill at around 75kph I headed down
the other side, gradually picking up momentum. I touched
the brakes to bleed off some of the speed, but it had little
effect, other than the tail starting to wag the dog. With
braking only exacerbating the situation, I tried accelerating
to straighten everything up, but to no avail.

Do enough miles with a boat in tow and

The upshot was the towbar ripping away from the car’s
chassis as we were spun through 180o and the by-now
detached boat leaping over an eight-wire boundary fence
backwards to land in a swampy part of the adjacent paddock.
The farmer arrived with his tractor and pulled the trailer, with
the boat still rigidly attached, back up to the road. On close
inspection the only mark was on the skeg of the outboard
which had clipped the top wire on the fence as it sailed over!
While some towing accidents and close calls are
unavoidable, others are preventable, and I learned some
valuable lessons from the experience.

Back up to align the towball with the trailer hitch. This is made
much easier with a backing camera, which the Hilux Hybrid has,
along with sensors. Without a camera you had to have someone
to guide you or do it by ‘braille’ (touch)!
Ensuring you have the hitch in the right position – many
trailers have hitches that can be changed to fit either a 1⅞th or
50mm tow ball – lower the trailer onto the ball then wind the
jockey wheel up. The wheel should be stowed pointing upwards
and the shaft full retracted to hold everything snug. Jockey
wheels left in the down-facing position are prone to striking the
ground when negotiating curbs or speed bumps.
If your trailer has two safety chains, these should be crossed
to limit the tow hitch movement should it come free of the tow
ball. A boat needs to be secured by four points of contact – tie-
down strops, the winch and safety chain.
Connect the lights, and with the aid a crew member,
check that they are working. While at the stern, check the
tie down/s to ensure the boat is held snugly on the trailer.
Now is a good time to check that the bung/s is in place, the
outboard raised and secured in position, and the prop flag is
properly attached.
Remove the wheel chocks and release the service (hand)
brake. If you have over-ride brakes, make sure the backing collar
is flicked over to allow the brakes to function as they should do.
ABOVE Check the bungs, secure the tie-downs and attach the outboard
flag before you hit the road – at both ends of the day. At the first opportunity, touch the vehicle’s brakes to make sure
the trailer brakes are functioning.

TIPS AND HACKS

To ensure the trailer hitch is the correct height when backing the ball
under it, use a permanent ink pen to mark on the jockey wheel shaft
the right height to align everything up.
1. Always trail your boat with the jockey wheel fixed in the up
position to prevent it striking curbs or raised speed bumps.
1 2
2. Use a turnbuckle as part of your safety chain to hold the bow of
the hull firmly against the trailer’s snubbing block.
3. Bearing Buddies are a great way to prevent salt water from
entering the wheel bearings. Use a cable tie to secure the end cap
in position.
4. Put your boat name, and a contact phone number, on your trailer.
3 4
If for any reason you are long overdue at the ramp, searchers can
determine who they are looking for or make contact.
5. Trailers are susceptible to the ravages of the marine environment.
If your trailer does not already have them, add a couple of hose
connections to allow you to flush out the main box sections of the
trailer frame. It does not hurt to add some anti-corrosion product
to the flush every few washes.
6. Adding an extra shackle makes it easier to attach the safety 5 6
chains, especially if hitching up in the dark.

ON THE ROAD
The biggest consideration when you finally get on the road
is stopping. With your average 6m trailerboat you have
doubled the weight you are in control of with boat and tow
wagon added together.
Many modern vehicles, like the Hilux Hybrid, use
radar or optical technology to allow the driver to set the
following distance, or at least slow you down until a more
acceptable gap is attained. But for most, following distance
is determined using the driver’s ‘eyeometer’ technology.
For standard driving the distance between vehicles is three
seconds, but when towing you should double this.
One of the scariest places to drive is in Auckland during
peak hour traffic. Leaving yourself plenty of space to stop
becomes almost impossible as any gap you create seems
to be an open invitation to other drivers to jump in – and
then brake!
A wet road, especially after a long spell of dry weather,
can be like walking on ice in well-worn jandals – an
accident waiting to happen.
Similarly, towing on a loose, ungraded or corrugated
metalled road requires your attention. Just as for wet roads,
allow for extra stopping times and exercise caution when
negotiating corners.
One of the roads that grabs my attention runs from Thames Setting a new standard in

boat – 6m and longer – there is no room should either you or
oncoming traffic cut across the apex of the corner.
If you are on the outside of a corner, stay as wide as
possible. Conversely if you are on the inside, stick as tight
as you can to the left-hand side. The trick is not to run your
wheels too close to the edge of the tarmac as that is where
the potholes and hard edges lurk, ready to damage a tyre.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to avoid when you meet a stock
truck and trailer on the corner.
On the open road, drive as smoothly as the conditions
allow. Anticipate the corners and if you need to drop your
speed, do it well before you start turning. The same applies
coming up to intersections and road works. Give yourself time.
With a trailer hitched up behind you are limited to 90kph

building up behind you and pull over regularly to let them
pass. Extending such courtesies to other road users will see

GET OUT OF JAIL FREE KIT

Over the years I have refined what I describe as my ‘Get out of Jail’

mine and others’.
The kit fits into a standard fish bin and whenever I have the boat
hitched behind for anything other than a short trip from home to
the ramp, it comes with me. It is in addition to a standard tool kit.

Patterson from Boating NZ, and Bruce McGill
from European Marine were tasked to deliver
the new Sasga Menorquin 55FB to Auckland,
ready to hand over to her new owner.
Sasga Yachts are built in Menorca, one of the Spanish
Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea. The company
manufactures the Sasga 35, 42, 48, 55 and 68 models.
My initial reaction on approaching the boat on the marina
was, “Oh! That’s an impressive boat!” Partly because of its
imposing physical presence, but its classic lines also catch the
attention, inviting you to look along the sheerline.
Stepping aboard, you notice the beautiful Flexiteek decks
complemented by substantial solid teak handrails and door
frames. Indeed, there is timber everywhere which was richly
glowing in the filtered morning light, including the varnished
iroko ceiling of the cockpit overhang.
This large boat welcomes you aboard, almost saying: “You’re
with me now – I’ll look after you.” It really does impart that feeling.

UNDERWAY
Stepping into the main saloon, the light white oak decapé
timber and large windows provide a light-filled space with
plenty of room to spread out. With departure imminent Bruce
busied himself turning on switches and starting the engines
which produced a distant thrum.

PERFORMANCE
The Mediterranean is known for at times boisterous and difficult
sea conditions with short, sharp waves. The design pedigree of
this boat is informed by fishing boats of the past, with their very
seaworthy hulls. The 55FB hull is a semi-displacement design,
with a long waterline and fine entry forward. It is easily driven
– we opened Carajillo up to get to 24.9 knots, which is pretty
impressive for a 24-tonne boat.
Fuel consumption figures weren’t available as the Volvo
Penta fuel data management software was yet to be installed
by the dealers in Auckland – part of the list of to-dos to finish
commissioning prior to handover.
However, fuel consumption figures from the hardtop
version of the same hull with the same engines was 113lph at
3000rpm/18 knots. With the fuel tanks holding 2800 litres,
that’s a cruising range of over 400 nautical miles.
The engine room is located aft, under the cockpit floor,
accessed either by a small inspection hatch or a larger one with
an electrically-operated cover on stays for easy servicing access
and additional storage space.
The engine installation is very tidy with plenty of room to
move around. There is a Kohler generator and watermaker
installed aft, and easy access to check steering coupling, shaft
seals and other routine engine maintenance items.
The transom platform tucks in neatly around the vessel’s
curved aft end. It lowers into the water hydraulically to provide
great options for retrieving tenders, divers and swimmers. There
is a fold-down boarding ladder on the starboard hidden away
neatly under a lid.

THE NEW ZEALAND distributor and technology partner for global
marine giant Furuno has a proud role to play in the Japan-based
conglomerate’s record sales success.
Furuno, developer of the world’s first fish-finder back in 1948, and
now one of the biggest international producers of marine navigation
and communication equipment globally, has recorded its largest
revenue year – 114B Japanese Yen or $1.26 billion.
Furuno is best-known in New Zealand for superyacht and
commercial fishing vessel radars, but tucked away in an industrial area
of Auckland’s North Shore, Electronic Navigation Ltd (ENL), parent
company of WASSP and Furuno New Zealand, is responsible for
opening up a lucrative new product line for the multi-national giant. D13 IPS 1350
ENL, majority owned by Furuno, is behind the world leading
WASSP Multibeam Sonar used extensively by the commercial
fishing, surveying and defence industries, as well as in the lucrative
international superyacht market.
WASSP’s revolutionary multibeam technology with its intuitive
design and user-friendly interface is 100 times faster and much more
accurate than single-beam sounders.
ENL Managing Director, Gareth Hodson says the very first WASSP
was sold into Saudi Arabia 20 years ago for mapping pipelines, and it’s
the international nature of that first sale that set the tone for WASSP’s
continued, meteoric expansion.
“WASSP has established markets in nearly 40 countries with a
number-one market share in many of them, from Asia to Europe to
North America, for the commercial fishing sector especially.
“Furuno began its association with WASSP 10 years ago as part of

global channels to market our product, as well as key collaboration
with the most advanced R&D in marine electronics on the planet.”
A decade on and Hodson says they’ve only just begun: “Ten years
on from that initial Furuno investment, our Auckland-based R&D
capability has been transformed while maintaining a Kiwi innovative
mentality towards solving customer problems.”
Hodson says the future vision for the group and WASSP is centred
around sustainability, from assisting with sustainable commercial
fishing practices through to supporting renewable energy exploration
such as sea-bed mapping for offshore windfarms.

Unique as!
In our travels profiling New
Zealand boating clubs, here’s
one a wee bit further afield –
but still in the family.

t’s true that Kiwis and Cook Islanders consider ourselves

I cousins; and so the Rarotonga Sailing Club (RSC) could

be thought of as one of ours. Well, sort of. For there are
also distinctive elements of independence about the Muri
Lagoon-based club, as we shall see.
Like their unique-in-the-world sailing boats, the Tangaroa
class. They could be proas, but they don’t shunt end-to-end like
true proas do, instead tacking just like a regular catamaran,
with the rudder at one end and the bow always at the other.
And the ama to windward on one tack, to leeward on the other.
Which must make balancing them, and stacking out for their
three-person crew, a tad idiosyncratic.
They can’t be catamarans either, for the two hulls are quite
different from one another. The closest description would be
to call the Tangaroas ‘sailing outrigger canoes’ – vakareti, or
‘Cooks’ proas’ in local parlance.
But that doesn’t capture it either, for they’re also a mix of
traditional Pacific and classic Kiwi forms. The Tangaroas, for
instance, carry the mainsail of the New Zealand vintage Idle
Along dinghies, on a much more modern-looking aluminium
mast. And the boats parked at the Sailing Club’s hardstand also
sport the newest, most hi-tech fittings on their plywood hulls
and rounded/weathered stacking out wooden seats.
That’s remembering the first Tangaroas actually had dugouts
as their main hull. There’s one hanging above the bar in the
clubhouse, long since retired. But I reckon it would still float, eh…

the alarm clock. They also had the most
innovative mythological creatures, and lots
of them. These were hybrid creatures that
combined the best attributes of both parents. One of the most
memorable was the centaur with a horse’s body down below
for speed and strength and the smarts and opposable thumbs
of a human up top. The Greeks understood many things, but
perhaps the power of the hybrid form is the most relevant to
this boat reviewer who is up against a deadline.

LAYOUT
Like the hull, the layout of the 206 Rae Line has
benefitted from some clever thinking. Starting
at the bow, there’s a full anchor locker, with
a bow roller and optional windlass. The cabin
sides are pulled out to the gunwales, which offer
loads of interior room and storage. Bunk infills
make up a large double berth for overnighting
if required and there’s mountains of storage to
accommodate all the clutter that goes with a
family day out on the water. The sliding cabin
hatch has steps moulded into it to facilitate
climbing up onto the foredeck through the
windscreen’s hinged centre section. Further aft a
large underfloor locker can swallow skis, fishing
rods and other large or long items.
The helm console to starboard is well laid
out with great access to the dash electronics,
equipment switches and controls and good
vision through the curved glass windscreen.
The helm and co-pilot chairs offer the comfort
of a bucket-style pedestal that’s adaptable to
stand-up or sit-down helming styles. Beneath
the moulded pedestal base of the helm seat is
a clever chilly bin storage recess while on the
other side of the boat an equally well thought

My friend Gary Miles Watson had caught a large squid the

well known for his unique and sometimes wacky approaches to
various fishing scenarios, but this time he at least followed
a rigging process he’d actually seen and liked.
Amazingly, when finished, it skipped and splashed

KINGFISH
While squid can also be super-effective on kingfish, especially
live ones, catching and keeping a bunch of squid alive is
problematic, as they often take chunks out of each other whilst
in the live bait tank
The rigging required is similar to what’s used for tuna: four
to five metres of 80-150lb nylon or fluorocarbon, often with a
4-8oz ball sinker incorporated in the rig to get it down. Again,
the squid should be hooked through the tip of its mantle so it
stays alive for longer.

DEEP WATER DENIZENS

As usual, fresh is best when it comes to bait, but decent-sized
frozen squid aren’t far behind. A squid is shaped to be easily
swallowed and is also tougher than some other frozen baits,
helping it to resist ‘pickers’ (such as tarakihi) until a hapuku,
bass or bluenose comes along.
The squid should be hooked just once or twice through its
upper mantle with a 11/0 to 13/0 circle hook, with the hook
point left well exposed so it can slide into position around the
fish’s jaw hinge.
If the squid aren’t especially big, try using two or even three
at a time to make them a more worthwhile meal.

SNAPPER
I’ll always remember Kydd Pollock, the son of the legendary
charter skipper and fisherman Rick Pollock, telling me that
snapper cannot refuse squid. How did he know this? Well, he
worked at a snapper-breeding facility on Kawau Island and as ABOVE LEFT & RIGHT Big squid make great hapuku baits, but

they should be slender for easy swallowing and ideally include
some tentacles, as this is the most attractive part of the squid.
And if there are no tendrils, make some with your knife, as
shown.

LEDGER RIGS FOR SNAPPER AND TARAKIHI

Again, it pays to keep squid baits relatively small and slim so
they are easily ingested. Having said that, I find strips of squid

tentacle clumps instead is a no-brainer. They generally attract

one hand, it’s fun to check out the latest new innovations and
marvel at the latest engineering and amenities. On the other
hand, most of us can’t help but think how much we’d like to
have these great features, but on our current ride instead of
a strange new hull with its attached learning curve.
Then of course there’s the whole price tag thing. While a new boat might be
lovely, sometimes it just isn’t on the cards no matter how badly we want it.
The good news is that it’s surprisingly easy to add all kinds of fresh goodies to
the current family runabout, bringing all-new excitement to the boat we already
enjoy. Instead of pining for a pricey new yacht, why not just update the one you
already have and enjoy the best of both worlds?
Here are just a few ways you can spruce up the old boat to give it all-new charm.

GET SERIOUS ABOUT SHADE

THAT GLORIOUS SUMMER sunshine always feels so good after a long, wet winter
– at least until you start to feel a bit crispy, and suddenly wish your boat had more
shade. Retractable sunscreens and Bimini tops allow boaties to easily add awning-
like sun protection to the cockpit, to the bow seating area, or both. Biminis are
a popular and easy DIY addition that greatly extend the comfort factor of any smaller
boat, and come in both manual and power varieties. Some even include underside
lighting for added convenience when boating early or late in the day.
If your boat’s too big for a Bimini, consider a power shade instead. People think
that power shades are only for large yachts, but they bring a lot of added comfort to
smaller cabin boats as well, extending aft over the cockpit at the touch of a button.
Most are a fairly easy DIY install, or they can be set up by a dealer at minimal cost.
Enjoying the sunshine out on the water is a great thing. But the dangers of too
much sun exposure are very real, making this comfort upgrade a valuable safety
enhancement as well.

LE T TH E L IG H T SHIN E IN

ALTHOUGH SHADE IS ESSENTIAL, so is a

certain amount of fresh air and sunshine,
explaining the growing trend among
boat builders today of installing sunroofs
everywhere – on the roofs of saloons, cuddy
cabins, T-Tops and even flybridges. They’re
a great feature that really let the sunshine
and fresh air shine through on a nice day, so
it’s understandable that everyone wants one.
What’s not so well known is that it’s really
easy to put a sunroof in your existing boat.
That’s especially true if you’re installing
a small sunroof as a direct replacement for
an older pop-up hatch. Manually operated
sunroofs are a straight plug-and-play
replacement for old-style pop-ups, while
even powered models are comparatively easy
weekend DIY projects.
Installing a new roof opening where none
existed before is also comparatively easy but
does require specialised equipment, making
it a job best left to the local dealer.

REMOTE MONITORING platforms like

BoatSecure, Mooring Watch, Floatech and
others were originally designed as anti-theft
devices, allowing you to track the boat’s
location in real time, anywhere in the world,
using a simple PC or a mobile phone. But
remote monitoring systems have evolved
to provide even more useful information
on the boat and its various systems while
you’re away, allowing owners to keep tabs on
things like battery levels, bilge pump activity
and shore power status. The ability to spot
potential problems before they get out of
hand can save both simple inconvenience
and real money.
A number of these systems offer two-
way communication on boats which are
equipped with digital switching, allowing
you to operate onboard systems from your
mobile phone. With a simple touchscreen tap
or swipe, you can turn on the lights, crank
up the air conditioning or start chilling the
fridge before you even leave the house, so
everything’s ready to go the moment you
step onboard.

SMOOTHING OUT THE BUMPS

GYRO STABILISER SYSTEMS like the Seakeeper, MC2 Quick, Veem and others claim
to eat the waves and eliminate up to 95% of a given boat’s rolling at sea, bringing
big ship comfort to more modestly-sized vessels.
While we think of gyros as big yacht luxury, they’re actually available to fit
boats down to about 7m in length. In smaller vessels, they most commonly install
somewhere near the helm, either in the floor, in the helm console itself or even
under the helm seat. The specific process of installing the device varies from one
boat to the next, based on the boat’s structure and available space, making it more
of a boat shop service appointment than a DIY project.
While gyros do eat up a certain amount of space and can impact storage
options, the increased comfort makes the trade-off attractive for many boaties.
Gyros make such a profound difference in onboard comfort that many people
simply add them to their existing boat rather than trading up to something
larger, saving even more money in the long run.

After visiting Cairns, they sailed to Sydney, across the

the best way to experience the islands is with one of the cruise

guests in eight state rooms.
She’s one of seven vessels in a fleet run by the Royal
Galápagos company (www.royalgalapagos.com). It offers boutique
cruises – pretty much all year round – with itineraries ranging
from four to eight days. Ours was an eight-day cruise (see map
on page 95) – an easy, comfortable and supremely rewarding
way to explore the islands.
It’s an action-packed cruise but only as busy as you want it to
be – and you don’t have to be super-fit or agile to participate. Every
day involves a range of activities – guided walks on the islands,
snorkeling (full wetsuits, masks and fins provided), kayaking and
dinghy cruises – and, of course, a lot of sumptuous dining. You’ll
leave a vessel a few kilos heavier than when you boarded.
Our crew included a guide fluent in multiple tongues,
with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the fauna and flora.

For all its fame, Darwin’s On the

read requiring concentration
and commitment. Don’t start on
it after a glass of wine. A much
more accessible and entertaining
book about the man and his
theories can be found in The

the superstructure created perfect gliding conditions – the birds

soared serenely for the entire duration of the crossing. A quick,
effortless way to get between islands. And no doubt a ticket to an
easy meal – a raid on some unsuspecting boobie’s nest.

SNORKELING
Life underwater is just as diverse. In addition to the rich variety
of fish, we swam among sea lions, penguins, mantas, turtles,
marine iguanas and sharks. We also saw humpback whales, and
thousands of colourful, Sally Lightfoot crabs. Penguins and sea
lions, of course, are an aberration at the equator – they’re only
in the Galápagos because of the icy water.
Sea lions are wonderfully graceful creatures and very curious,
darting playfully between the snorkelers (see video/QR code).
Marine iguanas are a little more diffident. Unlike their land-based
cousins which prefer to keep their claws dry, marine iguanas are
excellent swimmers and spend ages underwater chomping on
algae, and then basking in the sun to digest the meal.
The marine iguanas also provided a sobering reminder of
the vulnerability of life on our planet – and its susceptibility
to climate change/variation. The corpses of hundreds of the
reptiles lay decomposing on the islands. Their deaths, explained
our guide, resulted from an unusually active El Nino weather
event in the eastern Pacific. Warm water kills the algae. Without
a food source, the iguanas starve to death.
Like snorkelling, kayaking forays along the rocky coastlines
are an opportunity to view nesting birds close-up. And after the

chilly adventures, the reward is the piping hot jacuzzi on the
top deck – a beer/wine in a free hand, and the frigate birds
holding station above. Bliss.
And speaking of bliss: the skipper invited the 16 guests to
the bridge to celebrate crossing the equator. We all gathered to
watch the chartplotter count down the minutes as we steamed
north across the fabled line – and then it began climbing again.
Our celebratory drink was caipirinha – a delicious but lethal
concoction of cane spirit, lime and sugar. Half an hour later,
having negotiated the top of Isabela Island, we turned south
and re-entered the southern hemisphere. More caipirinha –
north/south quickly became irrelevant.

DARWIN’S VOYAGE
Darwin arrived at the Galápagos on board HMS Beagle in
September 1835 – one of many stopovers on a five-year,
round-the-world voyage. He’d left Portsmouth four years
earlier, aged 22.
As was typical of such expeditions, Beagle was on a voyage
of discovery, aimed at (among other things) updating nautical
charts of the planet’s relatively unexplored coastlines.
Even though Darwin had studied theology and was
destined for a life in the clergy, he was employed as a
naturalist/geologist for the voyage, largely, it seems, thanks
to his innate curiosity of the natural world. He’d been an
enthusiastic collector of fossils, animals and plants before
joining the expedition.
The ship only spent five weeks in the islands. Remarkably, He died in 1882, aged 73. Despite the initial firestorm

The 2½ raters of the 1890s PART I

In Vintage View last month I took the reader through the rating rules for yachts
to the final blossoming of the Length and Sail Area Rule, sometimes called the
Seawanhaka Rule, in the late 1880s. At last the plank-on-edge rule-cheating freaks
were outmoded and wholesome, sea-kindly fast yachts were encouraged. So, the
year 1890 brought with it a dramatic change in the shape, efficiency and beauty of
racing yachts driven by the scientifically-derived designs of Nat Herreshoff, G. L.

men built teak joinery throughout. 200 litres of fuel and 300l of fresh water in stainless steels tanks. Good seagoing
galley with four burner and oven stove. Isotherm 12 volt fridge/freezer. Eberspacher diesel heater for snug winter
sailing - very economical on fuel and electricity.
B&G Hornet depth sounder, new Watchmate AIS receiver (not installed) ICOM SSB radio and ICOM VHF. Two
house batteries and a start battery are charged by 2 x 300 watt solar panels and an Aerogen wind generator. Aries
wind vane self steering and rope drum on steering wheel.
Southern Cross also comes with a Southern Pacific RIB and 2hp Yamaha outboard. 3 anchors (Rocnor and 2
CQR) with 70m recently regalvanised 10mm anchor chain and Simpson Lawrence manual windlass. Sail locker
includes a Doyle cruising headsail on the Profurl furler, a spinnaker and MPS with sock, plus a light #1 genoa and
storm jib, plus six hank on sails which are perfectly useable.
We have owned her, and lived aboard, for 12 years but, in our present circumstances, don’t use her much and
would like to see her continue with appreciative owners. There is a comprehensive collection of documentation
from her history, magazine articles and book covers and study plans.
