CHARACTER SKETCH OF MATILDA

Matilda is a highly intelligent and independent young girl, who stands out not only because of
her extraordinary intellectual abilities but also for her resilience and kindness. Born into a
family that neglects her, she grows up in a hostile environment where her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Wormwood, belittle her and fail to recognize her brilliance. Despite the lack of
encouragement at home, Matilda demonstrates an insatiable thirst for knowledge, teaching
herself to read by the age of three and reading classic novels by the age of five. She is a
bookworm who finds solace in libraries and the world of stories.

Matilda's personality is marked by a quiet determination. Though she suffers emotional

neglect, she doesn’t let this diminish her self-worth. Instead, she uses her intelligence
creatively, often playing clever pranks on her parents as a way of standing up to their
mistreatment. For example, she glues her father’s hat to his head and replaces his hair tonic
with peroxide, giving him an unusual look. These pranks show her sense of justice and wit.

Her relationship with Miss Honey, her kind-hearted teacher, is transformative. Miss Honey
recognizes Matilda’s genius and treats her with the care and respect she never received from
her own family. Their bond reveals Matilda's deep capacity for love and empathy. With Miss
Honey’s support, Matilda begins to tap into her own potential, discovering she has telekinetic
abilities—another reflection of her inner strength.

Matilda is not just a child prodigy, but also a symbol of empowerment. She represents the
triumph of goodness and intelligence over cruelty and ignorance. Her courage and
compassion enable her to stand up to the fearsome headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, and
ultimately, Matilda helps Miss Honey reclaim her rightful home and happiness.

In essence, Matilda is a powerful, compassionate, and inspiring character whose resilience

and intellect help her rise above her circumstances, creating a better world for herself and
those she cares about.
