Unit 6 – Polynomials
Use this study guide to help you prepare for the quizzes, unit test, and assignment. The study guide contains guided
notes and practice activities to help focus your learning throughout the unit. The Study Guide is NOT graded; all
exercises are for you to practice and apply what you have learned in each lesson. For specific questions about any of
the content, please use the Ask the Teacher page in the course.
Unit Objectives
In this unit, you will learn the basic vocabulary associated with and the key aspects of polynomials, including the
degree of a polynomial and its coefficients. How to perform basic operations with polynomials, like the addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division of them. When dividing polynomials, how to factor (when possible) both the
top and bottom expressions, and to cancel like factors. You will be introduced to the two methods of dividing
polynomials; long division and synthetic division. You will learn how to make wise decisions regarding which method
would be most convenient and when. Plus, how to solve polynomials by applying the Fundamental Theorem of
Algebra, including listing possible rational roots, complex roots and irrational roots.

The answer is -9x3+1x2+8x+8+ 𝑥−1 . (x-1) is not a factor of -9x4+10x3+7x2-6 because it didn’t obtain a remainder
of 0.

Lesson 6.8 Fundamental Theorem of Algebra
Lesson Objective: How to solve polynomials by applying the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, including listing
possible rational roots, complex roots and irrational roots.
Example Problems:
Find all factors and zeros of Write the polynomial with given roots x=2 and x=-3i
y=x3+x2+4x+4
The degree of the polynomial is 3. Imaginary zeros always come in conjugate pairs.
Since the degree is 3, the polynomial will have 3 Since one zero is -3i, it will have a pair +3i
roots. So the polynomial will have factors of….
y=(x3+x2)+(4x+4) y=(x-2)(x+3i)(x-3i)
y=x2(x+1)+4(x+1) y=(x-2)(x2+9)
y=(x2+4)(x+1) y=x3-2x2+9x-18
y=(x-2i)(x+2i)(x+1) factors
x=2i, x=-2i, x=-1 zeros
Practice Problems: Now it is your turn. Follow the steps shown in the example problems.
