UCA2/IEC 61850: Key benefits
vs. previous generation
 Speed: 100 Mbps instead of few 10 kbps
– More data for a better operation & maintenance
 Peer-to-peer: No extra hardware
– Design of innovative automation schemes, late tuning
 IP (Internet Protocol) routing: Ubiquitous data access
– Capability to extend the system outside of the
substation
 Client-server: Instead of master-slave
– Flexible designs easy to upgrade
 Pre-defined names: Single vocabulary between users
– Easier engineering between teams
 XML references: Formal interfaces
– Consistency between engineering tools
IEC 61850 (1)

 Scope :
– Communication Networks and
Systems in Substations

 Objectives :
– Simplify engineering
– Reduce the number of protocols
– Enable interoperability between
devices from different manufacturers
IEC 61850 (2)

 Main features :
– Communication profiles based on
international standards
• IEC / IEEE / ISO / OSI.
• i.e. MMS, TCP/IP, Ethernet.
– LAN and Ethernet technology within the
Substation
– Data Object Model :
• Logical Nodes classes
• Data classes
– Peer-to-peer communication
– SCL : Substation Configuration Language
EPA : Enhanced Performance

 In spite of the name…….it is about
IEC 61850

 Objective : development and

implementation of a pilot installation
based on the IEC 61850 standard

 Several companies involved including

an electric utility, an engineering
company, a technological research
center and three manufacturers

Peer-to-Peer Communication

 Generic Object Oriented Substation

Event
– GOOSE messages
 Fast and reliable system-wide
distribution of input and output data
values
 Eliminates the traditional hard
wired signals between devices
 Reduces the installation and
commissioning costs
Peer-to-Peer Communication
application

 Protection coordination of
instantaneous overcurrent units

 Well-known solution to improve

operating time under bus faults
where busbar differential
protection does not exist

Conclusions
 There is a great international interest in
this new architecture
 The present communication technology
and architecture fulfills the technical
requirements of the IEC 61850 standard
series
 Adoption of new IEC 61850 standard
involves the developing a new product
line for control and protection
equipments.
 It is not only a “new protocol”
implementation, but the development of
completely new devices.
