Module 13 Content Guide

Big Idea
We are learning all about the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, you will be able to do the following:
1. Solve for missing side lengths and angles using the Law of Cosines
and special right triangle properties.
!
!"
"
2. Find the area of any triangle using the formula = #$% &

Topic 13.1 Law of Cosines
The Law of Cosines

 ' = ' +  ' − 2 ) cos()

Fill in the blanks of the algebraic proof below for the Law of Cosines.
Because of the Pythagorean Theorem, we can say that − !
+ = ! in triangle 1

Similarly, + = ! in triangle 2.
Expanding out the first equation gives us: − − + ℎ! = !

+ℎ! = !

Since ! + ℎ! = ! , we can substitute ! into the expanded equation to get ! − 2 + ! = !

Rearranging ! − 2 + ! = ! gives us ! = ! + ! −

Now let’s put in terms of triangle (using , , & , , ). Using Triangle 2, we can say that
cos = (Hint: Think adjacent divided by hypotenuse.)

Solving for in the equation gives us = 1 cos . Lastly, substitute 1 cos into ! = ! + ! − 2

 ! = ! + ! −

Topic 13.4 Area
Find the area of a triangle with trigonometry.
Fill in the blanks for the following formulas

"
sin = # if we solve for ℎ, then

"
sin = $ if we solve for ℎ, then

The formula for area of a triangle using trig functions is:

1
 = % ℎ % ℎ % sin( )
2
We can abbreviate this to say

Find the area of triangle
