Moderator Speech

Opening the Event:

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Intra-School Debate Competition organized by
the English Club of Vivekananda International School. It’s a great pleasure to see all of you
here, especially our esteemed judges, teachers, and, of course, our talented participants from
Grades 8 and 9.

Debate is not just about winning or losing but a platform to share ideas, to reason critically,
and to present arguments that challenge the way we think. Today, we are gathered here to
witness a battle of words, ideas, and intellect. So, let’s get ready for a morning filled with
insight, passion, and engagement.”

Introducing the Judges:

“Before we begin, let me take a moment to introduce our respected panel of judges who will
evaluate the participants today:
- [Judge 1's Name], [Designation and Department],
- [Judge 2's Name], [Designation and Department],
- [Judge 3's Name], [Designation and Department].

We are honored to have you here to judge this exciting competition.”

Explaining the Rules:

“Now, let’s go over the rules and format for today’s debate. The topic of today’s debate is
[mention the motion/topic].
- Each participant will have 4 minutes to present their main argument. You will hear a
warning bell at 3.5 minutes, and you must wrap up when the final bell rings at the 4-minute
mark.
- After the main speech, each participant will engage in a rebuttal round, where they will have
2 minutes to counter the opposing side’s arguments. Again, a warning bell will ring after 1.5
minutes, and the final bell at 2 minutes.

The participants will be judged on the following criteria:


- Content & Arguments – 30 Marks
- Clarity & Articulation – 20 Marks
- Body Language & Confidence – 20 Marks
- Rebuttal – 20 Marks
- Time Management – 10 Marks

Please note that any participant exceeding the time limit will face a deduction in marks.”

Encouraging the Participants:

“To all our participants, this is your opportunity to shine. Remember, today is not just about
proving that you are right, but about engaging with the topic, expressing your views with
confidence, and learning from one another. So, give it your best and enjoy the experience.”
Beginning the Debate:

“Without further ado, let us begin the debate. Our first speaker is [Participant 1’s Name] from
Grade [Grade], speaking [For/Against] the motion.
[Participant’s Name], the stage is yours.”

Transition Between Speakers:

“Thank you, [Participant 1’s Name], for that insightful presentation. Next, we have [Participant
2’s Name], who will speak [For/Against] the motion.”

Rebuttal Round Announcement:

“We have now completed the main speeches, and it’s time for the rebuttal round. Each
participant will get 2 minutes to counter the arguments presented by their opponents. Please
focus on addressing the points raised during the main speech.

Our first rebuttal will be by [Participant 1’s Name].”

Concluding the Debate:

“Thank you to all our participants for their thought-provoking arguments and rebuttals. Your
efforts have truly made this debate engaging and informative. We will now take a few
moments for the judges to finalize their scores.”

Inviting Principal and Judges (before scores are compiled):

“While we wait for the scores to be compiled, I would request our dear Principal Ma’am, Dr.
Nidhi Shrivastav to share few words of encouragement with our participants and the
audience. Put your hands together for Dr. Nidhi Shrivastav.”

Announcing the Results (after scores are compiled):

“And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. After a thorough evaluation by our
esteemed judges, I am pleased to announce the results of today’s competition.
The Best Speaker award goes to [Winner’s Name], and the overall Winning Team is [Team
For/Against the motion].
Let’s give them a big round of applause for their exceptional performance!”

Closing the Event:

“On behalf of the organizing team, I would like to thank our judges for their time and
expertise, the participants for their dedication and effort, and the audience for your support.
This competition has shown us the power of words and how they can inspire, challenge, and
change perspectives.

We hope today’s debate has inspired everyone to think critically and communicate with
confidence. Thank you, and have a great day!”
