1. SUMMARY OF OPERATION
The MAE99-04 termination panel provides an opto-isolated interface to the plant for 8
serial interface ports.
A cable links the termination panel to one of two 8 Channel connectors on the SBS-
GreenSpring 16 way RS232 Serial Interface PMC module, PMC-Sweet16.
The PMC module is mounted on a ‘PMC Span’ carrier board, which supports two PMC
modules.
The PMC Span carrier is mounted on the host PowerPC processor for the present
envisaged system,
A longer term view is that an alternative PMC carrier board and host processor may
well use a PCI backplane bus instead of the VME backplane and each carrier will use
individual slots on the backplane

2. HARDWARE DETAIL
2.1.1 Mechanical

The PCB size is 262mm x 72mm fitted into a Phoenix 72mm wide DIN rail mounted
base moulding.
The plant connections use two level 50° Spring Cage clamp terminals with the two
levels linked to provide for an incoming plant cable at the top level terminals and an
outgoing cable link to a second DP Console from the lower level terminals.

Most of the components are Surface Mount Devices, SMDs, which are mounted on the
Track-side or lower side of the PCB. The base moulding provides protection for the
components. The LEDs are reverse mount devices viewed through holes in the PCB.
The component side (top side) of the PCB is mainly ground plane to provide screening.
The DC-DC Converters are mounted on the component side of the PCB.

2.1.2 Ports

The ports are bi-directional and are RS485/422 compatible.

Additional protection circuitry has been included on the receive ports to make the input
compatible with RS232 levels for links less than 10 metres. This is to be avoided
wherever possible, the balanced data transmission of RS485 is infinitely better at
rejecting external noise.
Transmit ports are always RS485.
It is mandatory that there is a 0V connection between the devices on a RS485 link.
Each port is opto-isolated from each other and from the Processor 0V.

2.1.3 PMC Serial module

The Sweet 16 Serial PMC Module has two front panel connectors, with 8 ports on each
connector.
The link to the Serial PMC module utilises RS232 levels and comprises RXD/, TXD/,
RTS, CTS and 0V for each channel. Hardware handshake for the Serial PMC module is
used. RTS is linked to CTS on the termination panel. RTS (Request To Send) is set by
the S/W when a message is to be transmitted.

2.1.4 RS485 Transmit Enable TXEN

Setting RTS active triggers a Mono pulse generator with a period of 200mS which
enables the RS485 tri-state driver, [TXEN].
The period of the mono is longer than any envisaged transmitted message. RTS must
be cleared and then set again to re-trigger the TXEN for a subsequent message. In a
multi-master application viz. a duplex or triplex system, only the system which is on line
is permitted to set the RTS active and then transmit data.
Any Receive data will clear the TXEN mono, if set. This will allow a faster exchange of
data with a peripheral device.

2.1.5 Supplies

A DC-DC Converter with 24V Plant supply input provides +5V and -5V for the
onboard logic and the RS232 interface with the Sweet 16 PMC module.
Each port has individual DC-DC converters, operating from the main +/- 5V supplies.
which provide isolated supplies for the ports.
Supply voltage: 18Vdc to 36Vdc
Supply current @ 24V 120mA typ 200mA max

2.1.6 LEDs

Three LEDs for each port monitor Receive data, Transmit enable [TXEN] and the
Isolated supply.
The Receive port activity LED is not pulse stretched and monitors the RX data line
directly.
Rx LED off indicates normal connection, with no activity.
Rx LED flashing in short bursts, indicates normal activity.
Rx LED on permanently, probably indicates RS485 RXA and RXB lines are reversed.

2.2 RELIABILITY

MTBF = 10E6/12.19 = 82,035 Hrs
