Assignment 1 – Solutions

Due: Friday Sep. 30, 2022, at 12:00 PM

1. 820 g sample of sand was found to have the following amounts retained on each sieve.

5 mm 2.5 mm 1.25 mm 630 μm 315 μm 160 μm

40 g 105 g 173 g 165 g 194 g 133 g

a) Calculate its fineness modulus

b) Plot is particle size distribution
c) Compare the distribution with the grading requirements for fine aggregates (based on
CSA)

c) Compare the distribution with the grading requirements for fine aggregates (based on
CSA)

Percentage passing for all sieves are within the range → Well graded
The fineness modulus for FA1 should be not less than 2.3 and not more than 3.1
→ FM = 3.02 (Acceptable)
2. What is the maximum nominal aggregate size to be used in column with the following
reinforcing data: concrete dimension 400mmX400mm and 8-25M steel bars (three bars
on each side). The column has a concrete cover of 40 mm and the ties are 10M.

▪ ⅕ of the width of the form work = 400/5 = 80 mm

▪ ⅓ of the depth of the slab = NA
▪ The concrete cover in normal environment = 40 mm
▪ Half of the concrete cover exposed to chloride = NA
▪ ⅓ of the smallest dimension of the hose in pumped concrete = Not clear
▪ ¾ of the clear spacing between the steel bars;
o Spacing btn the bars=400-2(40)-2(10)-3x25= 225 /2 =112.5 mm
o ¾ (Spacing between the bars) = ¾ (112.5) = 84.375 mm.
▪ Choose 40 mm Nominal size
3. Determine the proportions of a concrete mixture (per 1m3) that is going to be used to
build a bridge in Montreal in accordance with the following specifications.

• Required average 28-day compressive strength = 35 MPa

• Required slump 100 mm
• Coarse aggregate: Maximum size = 28 mm; dry-rodded weight = 1620 kg/m3,
specific gravity = 2.55, absorption = 0.6%, natural moisture content = 1.3%
• Fine aggregate: Specific gravity = 2.62, absorption = 0.9%, natural moisture content
= 5.5%, fineness modulus = 3.0
• Cement: Type I, cement specific gravity = 3.15

𝑓’𝑐𝑟 = 35 MPa, slump = 100 mm, Quebec City, thus de-icing salts (severe or extreme)

CA: dmax = 28 mm, ρd = 1620 kg/m3, GSSD,CA = 2.55, wCA = 1.3%, absorption (wSSD,CA=
0.6%)

FA: GSSD,FA = 2.62, wFA = 5.5%, absorption (wSSD,FA = 0.9%), FM = 3.0

Cement: Gc = 3.15, Type (1)

 Find water-cement ratio: f (f’cr, exposure):

w/c = 0.39
 Find the required amount of water and air content: f (dmax, slump, exposure):

W = 175 kg/m3 of concrete, Air content (A) = 4-7 %. Take the average as 6%.

 Find cement amount:

C = w/(w/c) = 448.7 kg/m3 of concrete > 310 kg/m3 of concrete

 Find the volume of coarse aggregates: f (FM, dmax):

VCA = 0.65 m3/ m3 of concrete

CA = VCA x dry density = 0.65 x 1620 = 1053 kg/m3 of concrete

 Find weight of fine aggregates: (absolute volume method)

175 448.7 6 1053

𝑉𝐹𝐴 = 1 – (𝑉𝑤 + 𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑎 + 𝑉𝐶𝐴 ) = 1 − ( + + + )
1000 3.15(1000) 100 2.55(1000)
= 0.21
𝐹𝐴 = (2.62)(0.21)(1000) = 𝟓𝟓𝟎. 𝟐 𝒌𝒈/𝒎𝟑 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒

 Adjustment to materials considering the actual moisture content:

CA (1.3%) = 1053 (1+1.3/100) = 1066.7 kg/m3 of concrete

FA (5.5%) = 550.2 (1+5.5/100) = 580.46 kg/m3 of concrete

W = 175 – 1053 (1.3-0.6)/100 – 550.2 (5.5-0.9)/100 = 142.32 kg/m3 of concrete

4. As a material engineer in charge of designing concrete mix and facing the following
problems, which admixture would you use in each case during mixing or at the jobsite?

a) There is a large quantity of freshly mixed concrete and the work at the jobsite had to
stop because of rain.
b) More time is expected to be needed for finishing concrete.
c) The structure is subject to freezing.
d) Concrete is to be around tightly spaced reinforcing steel.
e) Concrete mix will be hauled a long distance.
f) High early strength concrete is required, but not necessarily high ultimate strength.

a) Hydration-control admixture (stabilizer)

b) Retarder
c) Air-Entrainer
d) Water reducer
e) Retarder or hydration-control admixture
f) Accelerator
