Lesson Title: The Leadership Challenges for the Youth of Today

Let’s Hit These:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Compare Leadership to a servant leadership
2.Discuss the three types of Leadership
3. Compare traits a leader should possess to a Christian leader
4. Carry out the values needed to become an effective leader in the community

Let’s Read:

In every organization, a leader is an essential person. He is the one that leads co-students to
attain the goals that they have set. An essential part of directing the people to work is leadership.
Several authors give different definitions of leadership. According to Fiedler (1967) one may
use the term leadership to: 1) distinguished people in an organization or group; 2) an ability; or
3) a relationship. In the first sense, leadership refers to those who provide direction and
guidance.

In the second sense, the leadership has been defined, among others, as “the art of inducing
subordinates to accomplish their assignments with zeal and confidence. (Koontz & O’Donnell,
1981).

In the third sense, it has been defined as “the relationship in which one person (the leader)
influences others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain goals desired by the leader
and, or group.” (Terry & Franklin, 1982).

Further, it is a planned process, which results in the following:

1. Challenging people to work collaboratively toward an ever-expanding vision of

excellence in the achievement of organizational and personal/professional goals
and objectives.
2. Creating a threat-free environment for growth, so that the creative talents and
skills are used to the best knowledge.
3. Encouraging and building working relationships that are individually and
organizationally satisfying, unifying and strengthening in the realization of
mutually determined goals and objectives. Such relationship results in effective
group problem solving.
4. Optimizing available material and human resources.

Definition of Leadership

Leadership is the process of influencing individuals or groups to achieve goals. It can

be correlated to the following: authority, direction, motivator, reinforce, persuasion,
cheerleader, coach, nurturer, and delegate.

Functions of Leadership

Villamargo as cited by Coloma & Herrera (2004) give three functions of Leadership,
such as:

1. Providing Vision

As a leader, it is expected of you to develop a vision for the organization through

participatory management. It is also better for you to involve your teammates, because
several heads are better than one.

2. Achieving Goals

To make your vision a reality, it is very essential that you and your co-workers set goals
or objectives. It is your task to see to it that the objectives you have set are achieved.
Your team members will have a good performance if you know how to motivate them.
Through this, you can expect quality output.

3. Initiating Camaraderie and Smooth Relationship

All organizations cannot avoid conflicts or disagreements, because of the presence of

individual differences. It is the task of the leader that this misunderstanding be
immediately resolves, so that it will not become worse. Through the effort of the leader
in solving this conflict we can expect a harmonious relationship between them or among
members of your organization.

The Ten Top Qualities of Great Community Leaders. By Moses Tetui

A community leader is someone who is perceived to represent the community’s
interests and plays the role of protecting them. This role could be paid for or voluntarily, most
communities have held this role as a voluntary one. Community leaders have a vast range of
roles that range from mobilizing communities for a common cause to designing courses of
action to overcome common challenges. The following are the ten most important qualities of
great community leaders given their roles in the community. These are now the qualities of
great servant leader.

1. Self- awareness
A good community leader should be knowledgeable of his or her strengthens and
weaknesses. This will enable the leader to exploit better his abilities while seeking help from
others for his or her weak areas. Leading others with the knowledge of self-ease’s a leader’s
job since it allows for the selection of the best-fit roles and the sharing of responsibilities
2. Eagerness to learn and adapt
As a community leader, earning respect from members is one of the key enablers of
ones’ roles. To do so, learning to listen from others, appreciating their input and changing
courses of action is essential.
3. Empathy
As a leader it’s important that you recognize how the community perceives you as
their leader. Empathy allows one to imagine different viewpoints from the
community members as well as understand their feelings. With this perspective, a leader
may be perceived as one who cares and this will increase his or her creditability in the
community.

4. Honesty and integrity
A leader must ensure that he is trustworthy to the community and to other leaders.
Trust facilitates productive space for discussions and desired social change. Once trust is
broken, respect is diminished and productivity is eliminated.
5. Dedication
As a community leader, who most likely is playing a voluntary role, it’s important
that
you recognize your own benefits from the role. Time spent on a community role can only
be beneficial if it’s seen to create space for desirable social change both for the leader and
the community. This recognition will create energy and dedication to one’s roles given
the sometimes difficulty and draining role of community leadership.
6. Service
Involving oneself in general community services is yet another great quality of a
community leader. As a leader being seen to serve your own members creates respect and
legitimatizes one’s role in the community.
7. Interpersonal skills
A community leader should be able to interact with other members of the community
with ease. This calls for good communication and collaboration skills. Being able to
negotiate, mediate, listen to others, and articulate arguments and to work with members
external to the community is essential.
8. Forward-thinking
Forward thinking is about being visionary as a leader, one should dream for his
community and effectively share the dream. He should be able to think of the future and
set sustainable goals by developing his/her own critical thinking skills and involving the
younger generations.
9. Intelligence
A competent leader is seen as one who can take care of the tough stuff that may
happen to him or the community. Intelligence here is beyond being smart to include high
levels of both emotional and social intelligence.
10. Motivation
Lastly, a great leader inspires as to create the desired social change. He does this in a
variety of ways but always remembers to include others in his thought process and
courses of action.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP
According to Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodger, one of the key elements of being a
servant leader is to consider people’s development as an equal end as their performance.
A servant leader, the way to carry out the vision is by developing people so that
they can work on the vision even if you are not around. The ultimate sign of an effective
servant leader is what happens when you are not there. That was the power of Jesus’
leadership – the leaders. He trained them to change the world when He promised them,
and He promises us with this “Surely, I am with you always, on the very end of the
age”(Matt 28:20). As we seek to leave legacy of servant leadership behind when our own
reason of leadership is finished, we can do so by modelling our values and investing our
time in developing others.

The following are the three skills needed for effective community leaders:

x Diagnosis
x Flexibility
x Linkages and partnering for performance

Diagnosis

There is no simple leadership style (i.e participative, authoritarian, etc). The

efficiency and effectiveness all depend on the total development of the person you
want to influence; the style of leadership to be applied should be appropriate to the
profile of the community (i.e. socio-economic status. Educational attainment, etc)
The diagnosis skill helps us to assess and understand that every task, people
as well as the community can be different levels in terms of commitment (i.e. trust,
confidence, values, and depromiser) and competence (i.e. competitiveness,
knowledge, skills, and experience).

Flexibility
Once you know and have assessed well the people’s and community’s
development level, NSTP teachers and students as service providers should be
flexible and be able to use a variety of leadership styles comfortably to help the
constituents of the community achieve their tasks or goals.

Linkages and Partnering for Performance

The NSTP teacher and students must encourage the people of the community
to work together as stakeholders of the community. With the limited resources of the
community, NSTP teachers should facilitate the possible partnership or linkages of
the community with other non-government organizations (NGO’s). This involves
leaders providing the right community servant-leadership approach and style for the
right development level. This is exactly the essence of RA 9163 (NSTP Law) – to
transform the Filipino students toward civic consciousness and develop a community
of people living not only for themselves but for others.
