COMMON NETWORK
CABLES
COMMON NETWORK CABLES
Until recently, cables were the only medium
used to connect devices on networks. A wide
variety of networking cables are available.
Coaxial and twisted-pair cables use copper to
transmit data. Fiber-optic cables use glass or
plastic to transmit data. These cables differ in
bandwidth, size, and cost. You need to know
what type of cable to use based on the job
requirements. You also need to be able to
troubleshoot and repair problems along the way.
❑ ADVANTAGE:
• Cheap.
• Easy to work with

❑ Disadvantage:
Low data rate
Short range
TYPES OF TWISTED PAIR CABLE

❑ Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)

Cable
❑ Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable
ADVANTAGE:

➢The advantage of UTP is its low cost.

➢Easy installation procedure
➢It is basically used in LAN
implementations
UTP IS CATEGORIZED BASED ON THE
FOLLOWING FACTORS:
❖ Number of wires inside the cable
❖Number of twists in a wire

Category - 6a
Category -7
Category -8
CATEGORY 5E (ENHANCED
CATEGORY 5)

•Bandwidth: Up to 100 MHz

•Max Speed: Up to 1 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet)
•Max Distance for Speed: 100 meters
•Usage: Widely used in home and small business networks;
supports gigabit speeds and is backward-compatible with Cat5.
CATEGORY 6

•Bandwidth: Up to 100 MHz

•Max Speed: Up to 1 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet)
•Max Distance for Speed: 100 meters
•Usage: Widely used in home and small business networks;
supports gigabit speeds and is backward-compatible with Cat5.
CATEGORY 6A (AUGMENTED
CATEGORY 6)

•Bandwidth: Up to 500 MHz

•Max Speed: 10 Gbps
•Max Distance for Speed: 100 meters
•Usage: Ideal for high-speed enterprise networks;
provides full 10 Gbps speeds across the full 100
meters and minimizes interference effectively.
CATEGORY 7 (CAT7)

•Bandwidth: Up to 600 MHz

•Max Speed: 10 Gbps
•Max Distance for Speed: 100 meters
•Usage: Designed for data centers and high-
performance environments; has shielding on each
twisted pair for extra protection against crosstalk
and EMI.
CATEGORY 8 (CAT8)

•Bandwidth: Up to 2000 MHz

•Max Speed: Up to 40 Gbps
•Max Distance for Speed: 30 meters
(primarily for data center short-range connections)
•Usage: Ideal for data centers with high-speed
requirements; suitable for switch-to-switch or server-
to-server connections.

COAXIAL CABLE
• Coaxial cable is a copper-cored
cable surrounded by heavy
shielding
• It is consists of a hollow outer
cylindrical conductor that surrounds
in a single inner wire made of two
conducting elements.
• Surrounding the copper conductor is
a layer of flexible insulation. Over
this insulating material is a woven
copper braid or metallic foil that
acts both as second wire in the
circuit and as a shield for the inner
conductor
USES OF COAXIAL
CABLE
• Coax is an important type of
cable that is used in wireless and
cable access technologies.
• Coax cables are used to attach
antennas to wireless devices.
• The coaxial cable carries radio
frequency (RF) energy between
the antennas and the radio
equipment.
USES OF COAXIAL
CABLE
• Coax is also the most widely
used media for transporting high
radio frequency signals over
wire, especially cable television
signals. Traditional cable
television, exclusively
transmitting in one direction, was
composed completely of coax
cable.
TYPES OF COAXIAL
CABLE
• Thicknet (10BASE5)
- is a coaxial cable used in
network operating 10 Mbps, with
a minimum length of 500 meters

•Thinnet (10BASE2)
- is
a coaxial cable used in
networks operating at 10 Mbps,
with a minimum length of 185
meters
TYPES OF COAXIAL
CABLE
• RG-59
- is most commonly
used for cable television in
the U.S.
• RG-6
- is a higher quality
cable than RG-59, with more
bandwidth and less
susceptibility to interference
THINNET VS THICKNET
FIBER-OPTIC
CABLE
• An optical fiber is a glass or
plastic conductor that
transmit information using
light
• Fiber optic cable has one or
more optical fiber enclosed
in a sheath or jacket.
FIBER-OPTIC
CABLE
• Because it is made of glass,
fiber-optic cable is not
affected by EMI or RFI.
• All signals are converted to
light pulses to enter the
cable and converted back
into electrical signals when
they leave it.
FIBER-OPTIC
CABLE
• Fiber optic cable can reach
distances of several miles or
kilometers before the signal
needs to be regenerated
TWO TYPES OF GLASS
FIBER-OPTIC CABLE
• Multimode
- is the cable that has
a thicker core than single-
mode cable.
- easier to make, use
simpler light sources such
as Light Emitting Diodes
(LED)
TWO TYPES OF GLASS
FIBER-OPTIC CABLE
• Single-mode
- is the cable that has
a very thin core.
- It is harder to make,
uses lasers as light source,
and can transmit signals
dozens of kilometers with
ease
COMMON CONNECTORS

• SC (Standard Connector)
- The SC connector
comes with a locking tab that
enables push on / pull off
operation.
COMMON CONNECTORS

• ST Connector
- The ST connector’s
keyed bayonet design is
similar to that of a BNC
(Bayonet Nut Connector or
Bayonet Neill-Concelman)
connector.
COMMON CONNECTORS

• LC (Lucent Connector)
- The Lucent Connector,
sometimes referred to as the
Little Connector, is a small
form factor FOC that uses a
1.25 mm ferrule.
MATERIALS NEEDED IN TERMINATING
STRAIGHT THROUGH/CROSS-OVER CABLE

• ETHERNET CABLE
(CAT5 or CAT5e)
• RJ 45
• CRIMPING TOOL
• LAN TESTER
