TOPIC CIVIL DRAWINGS
AIM OF LESSON Learners are required to do the following:
Limited to single-storey dwellings, 1st angle orthographic working drawings with floor plans, basic single line elevations
and sectional elevations showing the detail of the foundation to the slab.
Include the following:
• Annotations, labels, dimensioning and scales/• Relevant abbreviations and conventions
• On the floor plan only: windows and doors/• Hatching detail
• Perimeters and floor areas

INTRODUCTION Civil or building drawings are prepared in first angle orthographic projections according to the SANS 10143 Code of
Practice for Building Drawing. This lesson will explain the differences between civil drawings and mechanical drawings in
terms of views and the layout of the drawing sheet. We will cover the features that make up the foundation to the slab
of a single-story house. The drawing of windows and doors in a floorplan and the calculation of perimeters and floor
areas.
CONCEPTS AND By the end of this topic the following concepts and skills must be attained.
SKILLS Learners should be able to draw the floorplan and fixtures. The section through the foundation. They should adhere to all
drawing criteria. Please memorize and practice how to draw all fixtures in the floorplan and the elevation: Bath, Shower,
toilet, sink, build-in cupboards, etc. Please refer to your textbook for the complete list of illustrations. The hatching and
labelling of all components count a lot of marks in civil drawings.
The printing of labels and abbreviations must be in capital letters. Learners should make sure that they are able to add
basic electrical accessories to a floorplan. Learners must be able to determine and calculate the perimeter and area of
a floorplan. Learners must be able to work to scale 1:50,1:100 and 1:20.

ASSESSMENT
CONSOLIDATION • Define all the terminology relevant to the topic/s covered in this lesson:
• All hatching methods must be applied when doing the drawing.
• Practice and complete the section of various civil drawings.
• Use the correct line types: Construction lines, hidden lines, ext.
• Practice daily your drawing exercises.
VALUES You will be able to interpret Civil drawings
Neatness and pride will be instilled.
Presentation is a reflection of your personality.
Clarity is an expression and a pride of an engineer.
Accuracy will eventually realize the actual product and prevents waste of time and money.
A wrong drawing can lead to a waste of resources.
