Cho - Speech 2 Master
Introduction:
➔ When you were younger, did dinosaurs ever peak your curiosity? Did it ever lead you to wonder
what old Earth was like?
◆ We will be discussing what happened to specific individuals who had the same curiosity
as you all and had the resources to do something about it.
Jurassic Park
➔ (In honor of the last film of the Jurassic series coming out!)
Intro to JP
➔ Jurassic Park is a 1993 science fiction film directed by Stephen Spielberg. It is an adaptation of
Michael Crichton’s brilliant book, Jurassic Park, published in 1990.
◆ I love both so much, the movie does a really good job of adapting the novel despite
leaving out certain details. The novel is still one of my favorites- it’s so interesting and
includes a lot of well-written facts in genetical science
🙂
● It made me want to become a geneticist for years until I realized how bad I am at
science
Premise of JP
➔ The premise of the novel and the film are generally the same. The film is set on the fictional
island of Isla Nublar, where a wealthy businessman by the name of John Hammond and a team of
genetic scientists created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. They did this by deriving
dinosaur blood from a mosquito that was fossilized by amber for millions of years. A small group
of individuals including two paleontologists, a mathematician, and the two grandchildren of John
Hammond visit the island as the very first visitors. However, due to a fatal shutdown of the park’s
power facilities and security precautions, the group and the workers of the island struggle to
survive and escape the perilous island.
➔ This movie and the rest of the series is considered iconic due to its absolute brilliance and
technologically advancement of the first movie at the time
Transition
➔ Interestingly enough, the novel is often regarded as a cautionary tale about genetic engineering
◆ It explores the disregarding of natural human ethics and nature’s “will” in terms of the
de-extinction of the dinosaurs in the franchise
➔ Although we know that this is a premise that is fully fiction and that the chances of being able to
bring back dinosaurs from extinction is extremely slim, why are we so curious about dinosaurs?
◆ In the storyline, why did John Hammond and these genetic scientists believe it was a
good idea to bring back these dinosaurs?
● They are all smart individuals, not even one of them thought this was a bad
idea??
*The Psychology Behind Human Curiosity
*This entire section is still a WIP- I am still conducting research
➔ Humans are wired for curiosity
◆ Innate motivation to explore the unknown
● This is FOR UNDERSTANDING- we can acquire new knowledge, gain insight,
and expand understanding
◆ Dopamine rush when we find understanding (this is our brain’s reward chemical)
● Dopamine is connected to the brain’s curiosity state
◆ Cognitive induced deprivation that arises from perception of a gap within our knowledge
and understanding
● This is a sensation that is very similar to hunger and thirst
