Subject Name: Finite Element Method in Engineering Subject Code: ME 60407 Full Marks: 60

Marks distribution for each question is indicated within brackets.

Assume any suitable data that may be required for solution, stating clear justifications.
Answer all questions.

(1) (a) Considering a one-dimensional element, as shown in Figure 1, and assuming a suitable
polynomial displacement function,
1 2 3
(i) derive the quadratic shape functions.
(ii) express the derived shape functions in Lagrange’s interpolation x
form. Figure 1

(b) Considering a ‘Constant Strain Triangle’, deduce the relationship between strain and
nodal displacements.
(7 + 3 + 5 = 15)

(2) Consider the truss shown in Figure 2. All members of the truss 60 kN
have identical areas of cross-section A and modulus E. Take the
stiffness of spring = 10 N/mm. Determine the following: 30 kN C

(i) the element stiffness matrices. L

(ii) assemble structural stiffness matrix K for the entire truss.
(iii) state the condensed equations required for solution of unknown

displacements.
(6 + 6 + 3 = 15) K = 10 N/mm

(3) (a) Considering the six-node rectangular isoparametric element

(Figure 3), deduce the shape functions at each node.

(b) Considering a flexural beam element, derive: (i) shape function

matrix; (ii) strain displacement matrix.

(5 + 5 + 5 = 15)

(4) The global coordinates (in mm) of a quadrilateral element are shown in Y
Figure 4. Calculate the following using 2 x 2 gauss quadrature numerical
integration method. The x, y coordinates of Gauss points are at ± 0.57735,

for the element. E = 200 GPa, ν = 0.3. 1 2
(2, 2) (6, 2)
