Three-phase AC circuits

1. Three similar coils each having a resistance of 5Ω and an inductance of 0.02H are
connected (a) in star, (b) in delta to a 415V (line-line voltage), 3-phase, 50 Hz supply.
Calculate the line current and total real power absorbed in each case.

2. Two three-phase wye-connected loads are in parallel across a three-phase supply. The first
load draws a phase current of 20A at 0.9 power factor leading, and the second load draws
a phase current of 30A at 0.8 power factor lagging. Calculate the following:

(a) Line current from the source side and its power factor

(b) Real power supplied by the wye-connected supply if the supply phase voltage is
400V.

3. A three-phase, Y-connected induction motor is supplied by a three-phase and four-wire

system with line-line voltage of 220V(RMS) and the impedances of the motor is
(6.3+j3.05)Ω per phase. Determine the following:
(a) the magnitude of the line current,
(b) the power factor of the motor,
(c) the three-phase average power consumed by the motor,
(d) the current in the neutral wire.

4. A three-phase induction motor draws 20 kVA at 0.8 power factor lagging from a 415V
(line-line voltage) three-phase supply.

Determine
a) the real power drawn from the supply
b) the reactive power drawn from the supply
c) the line current

5. A balanced three-phase load is connected to a 3.3kV (line-line voltage), 50 Hz supply.

The load draws a line current of 60 A and has a power factor of 0.9 lagging. Calculate
the real, reactive, and apparent power drawn by the load.

6. A star-connected load consists of three identical impedances of (8 + j6)Ω each and is

supplied from a 415V (line-line voltage), three-phase source. Find the power factor of the
load and the three-phase real, reactive and apparent powers drawn from the source.

2. A transformer with a rating: 200VA 50hz Vp = 240V Vs = 100V. If the primary of

the transformer is connected to a 240V 50hz supply, what is the maximum size of
capacitor that could be connected to the secondary of the transformer?

3. A transformer has a primary to secondary turns ratio of 1.5 to 1. It is desired to operate

a 200Ω resistive load at 150V. Find the primary and secondary currents, the source
voltage and the power input to the transformer on the primary side. (Assume the
transformer is ideal).

4. A transformer is rated at 10kVA with ratio 500/125V 50Hz. It is loaded with a 10Ω
impedance with a power factor of 0.75 lagging. The supply voltage to the primary of
the transformer is 480V. What is the kVA delivered to the load, load voltage, load
current, primary current, power delivered to the load and the primary power factor.

5. A transformer is rated at 100 VA and has a secondary winding of 50 V output. If a

capacitor C is connected to the output it draws 1.4 A from the secondary winding. If a
resistor R is connected to the secondary it would draw 1.4A. If both resistor and
capacitor were connected together in parallel would the transformer be overloaded.
