So who is J.K. Rowling
Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, near Bristol, England. She grew up in England and
in Chepstow, Gwent, Wales. She loved reading and wrote her first story at the age of six. After
graduating from the University of Exeter in 1986, Rowling began working for Amnesty International
in London, England. The idea for the Harry Potter stories came to her during a train ride in 1990, and
she began writing the magic adventure while sitting in cafés and pubs. In the early 1990s she traveled
to Portugal to teach English as a foreign language. After a brief marriage and the birth of her
daughter, she returned to the United Kingdom, settling in Edinburgh, Scotland. Living on public
assistance between work as a French teacher, she continued to write, often on scraps of paper and
napkins.
The story follows Harry Potter, an 11-year-old orphan raised by his only remaining family, his
aunt Petunia, her husband Vernon, and their son Dudley. Harry is mistreated, forced to sleep in a
cupboard under the stairs, and regularly bullied. On his eleventh birthday, Harry begins receiving
mysterious letters , but his aunt and uncle refuse to let him read them. Finally, a giant named Hagrid
intervenes and reveals to Harry the truth that has been hidden from him: Harry is a wizard, born to
famous parents. Hagrid introduces Harry to the Wizarding World, where he learns that he is famous
because his parents were killed by the dark wizard Voldemort when he was an infant. Against all
odds, Harry miraculously survived Voldemort’s attack, leaving him with a lightning-shaped scar

After visiting Diagon Alley to gather his magical supplies, Harry enrolls in Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he befriends Ron Weasley, who comes from a large, modestly-living
wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, an exceptionally bright student born to non-magical
parents. While studying magic, Harry enters a world filled with wonders and challenges. He learns to
play Quidditch, a popular wizard sport, and uncovers secrets about his family.

Harry and his friends begin to suspect that Professor Snape, the Potions Master,
intends to steal something hidden in the school’s dungeons: the Philosopher’s Stone, which grants
immortality to its possessor. Eventually, they discover that Voldemort, weakened and hiding after his
failed attack on Harry, is trying to regain his power by obtaining the stone. Fueled by courage and
friendship, Harry and his friends decide to face the trials guarding the stone. They navigate a series of
puzzles and challenges, with Harry eventually coming face-to-face with Voldemort. Through his
mother’s sacrificial love, which granted him magical protection, Harry prevents Voldemort from
regaining his power.
