Paper Assignment - Brief Summary
Paper Assignment - Brief Summary
Identify a specific experience in your life that has significantly shaped you as a
person. Now explain how social class influenced this experience. Then explain how
race/ethnicity or sex/gender (or both) influenced this experience. How might you
compare and contrast your experiences to someone with a different sex or gender
identity or a different racial or ethnic background, social class than you have?
Your essay should be about 3-4 pages in length (double spaced, 12 point font) with a
reference page at the end.
When you show how social class (race/ethnicity or gender/sex or both) influences you
(or someone who would share your similiar sociological profile) - this is when you would
need to use academic sources (journals, articles, etc.) to build/support your argument.
Example:
One way to start this off might be to describe yourself within a sociological context, or to
look at some event or element of your life that you feel influences you more than others.
You could also look at what is expected of you by your family or society if you’re the
youngest male or the oldest female in the family.
So I start out with who I am within a sociological setting. I predict that anyone who
shares this profile would probably have limited educational and life choices due to being
raised by an undereducated, religiously conservative family within a rural community.
But I need to explain why / how this profile is influenced by these forces.
Further within the paper, I would need to explain how/why these life choices would be
limited. How is the profile limited because of social class (being raised by an
undereducated family in a rural setting) or possibly because of sex / gender (what is
expected of a male fitting this profile versus a female)?
Additionally, I predict that the experiences of those who match this profile would be
different if their parent's educational level (in terms of education as a representation of
social class) was higher. I would explore the impact of parent's education (using
academic sources) upon their children.
