Motivation Letter

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my great interest in participating in «Armament and Disarmament

Summer School 2024». The present course is of major interest to me as it may become the perfect
addition for me on the way to my professional dream of strengthening trust between Russia and
the West in modern issues of mutual interest.

I am currently a fourth-year student at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in

Moscow, Russia, with a major in International Relations in the fields of Scientific Technologies
and Industry. Currently, I am an intern at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation,
Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control.

Since the beginning of 2022, the world has been living in increased instability. In my
opinion, an aggravating circumstance for global stability is a decrease in the level of trusting
contacts between Russian experts and their counterparts from the United States and European
countries. Notwithstanding this declining trend, I firmly believe that at a time of critical tension in
the world, human reason must prevail over ideologies and divergencies. However, if you want to
make a change, you have to start with yourself – it is the principle I adhere to in my academic
endeavor.

In 2020, in my first year of study at the university, I was invited to become one of the
coordinators of the Science Diplomacy Club MEPhI, whose goals are to provide a platform for
experts in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy, as well as to share experiences with students
who are just getting acquainted with topics of atomic energy and arms control. Over the years,
dozens of unique representatives of the CTBTO, Rosatom State Corporation, the IAEA, the
Russian NPOs, and think-tanks have become guests of our association. In November 2023, I and
a group of young experts in the field of disarmament and peaceful uses of atomic energy from
Russia held meetings with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, and Dr. Robert Floyd,
Executive Secretary of the CTBTO. It was the academic trip to Vienna that convinced me of the
indispensability of a dialogue with all interested parties, no matter what color their passport is,
what their nationality is, and what their view of historical processes is. A dialogue for peace is of
strategic importance today. I am confident that the younger generation of experts is capable of
bringing rapprochement of national positions regarding the disarmament issues.

«Armament and Disarmament Summer School 2024» will allow me to make further
contributions to the acceleration of the rapprochement between Russia and other countries in
disarmament and international security. The School will be an invaluable opportunity for me to
learn from the world’s best pundits whose expertise, surely, is unmatchable.

Considering the above, I am convinced that I am the perfect candidate for «Armament and
Disarmament Summer School 2024».

Thank you for considering me for this program and I look forward to hearing from you
soon.

Sincerely,

Danila Kabin
