Instruction: Solve the following problems, show your solutions to be credit. Put a box of your final answers.

1. A 50 m tape is 0.04 m too short used to laid out a line AB. The measured distance was known to be 130.45 m.
What is the adjusted distance of the line AB.
2. A 50 m tape was used to measure a square lot that was 0.05 m too short. If the area of the lot is 5000 m 2, what is
the error in the computed areas?
3. A man paced a 50 m line 4 times and recorded 70, 71.5, 69.5 and 72 paces to determine his pace factor. Then he
took 460, 458, 471, 457 paces in an unknown distance of a line AB. Compute the distance of line AB base on his
pace factor.
4. The distance recorded for a baseline was 430.60 using a 100 m steel tape standardized at 15ºC and with a standard
pull of 10 kg. At the time the temperature was measured to be 20ºC and the pull exerted was 16 kg. Unit weight of
steel is 7.86 g/cc and weight of steel is 2.67 kg, E = 200,000 MPa, α = 70 x 10-6 m/ºC.

Test II
1. A 50 m tape is 0.04 m too short used to laid out a line AB. The measured distance was known to be 130.45 m.
What is the adjusted distance of the line AB.
Solution:
Error due to Too Short = 0.04m

Correction=0.04 ( 130.45
50 )
=0.10436 m

Since the word used is “to laid out” the error due to Too Short will be add.
AB=130.45+0.10436=130.55436 m Ans.

2. A 50 m tape was used to measure a square lot that was 0.05 m too short. If the area of the lot is 5000 m 2, what is
the error in the computed areas?
Solution:
2
Areaof Square=s
2
5,000=s
s=70.7107
Correction=0.05 ( 70.7107

=0.0707 m

Adjusted Distance=70.7107 −0.0707=70.64 m

2
Corrected Area= (70.64 ) =4990.0096 sq . m.
Error ∈the computed area=5,000− 4,990.0096=9.9904 sq . m . Ans.
3. A man paced a 50 m line 4 times and recorded 70, 71.5, 69.5 and 72 paces to determine his pace factor. Then he
took 460, 458, 471, 457 paces in an unknown distance of a line AB. Compute the distance of line AB base on his
pace factor.
Solution:
70+71.5+ 69.5+72
MPV for paced = =70.75 pace
4
50 m
Pace Factor= =0.7067 m/ pace
70.75 pace

a. What is the correction for temperature?
b. What is the pull correction?
c. What is the true length of the baseline?
