LESSON 1:
Introduction to Information and Communication Technology
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) plays a vital part in our lives
and in all aspects in our society. ICT has become the main method of communicating
through various technologies, getting information and education, getting services from
businesses, hospitals, government agencies, purchasing products and services, doing
personal and business transactions, and expressing social advocacies and awareness
online (Jema Inc.).
To know more about ICT just go to https://bit.ly/3obA3j5 and watch the video on
the definition of Information and Communications Technology.

I. Motivation

Look around you? Inside your home and among your family members? What have
you observed? What do they usually do? Do some of them frequently check their
Facebook account? Do they check the news on social media?
In a digitally connected era, where do you stand? Are you among those who strive
to empower themselves as well as the community with the ways of technology? Or are
you among those who refuse to succumb to the changes brought by technology.
Technology is a double-edged sword but if you wield it correctly, it can be an ally.
How do you become technologically enabled and empowered?

ICT, or information and communications

technology (or technologies), is the infrastructure and
components that enable modern computing. Although there
is no single, universal definition of ICT, the term is generally
accepted to mean all devices, networking components,
applications and systems that combined that allows people
and organizations (i.e., businesses, nonprofit agencies,
governments and criminal enterprises) to interact in the
digital world.
Information and Communications Technology
It deals with the use of different communication Technologies such as mobile
phones, telephone, Internet, etc. to locate, save, send, and edit information. ICT
permeates all aspects of life, providing newer, better, and quicker ways for people to
interact, network, seek help, gain access to information, and learn.
To better understand ICT, its components and uses just go to
https://bit.ly/35D5Umg and watch the video on Introduction to ICT.

“Digital Age”
Emergence and development of different technologies
that help people accomplish tasks in a more effective way.
Example is on use of smartphones for communication.

Empowerment refers to the process of giving yourself, or other people, the

capacity to achieve a specific end-goal. Technology literacy is the ability to use digital
technology and communication tools to define an information need, access, manage,
integrate and evaluate to be able to communicate this information to others.

Who are the Millenials?

What separates Generation Y from X? And hey Gen Z and Gen A, welcome to the party!
What’s the cutoff? How old is each generation? Are they really that different?

The Millennial generation refers to people who were born during the last two
decades of the 20th century. It always takes sociologists and other social scientists a few
years to settle on a name. For a while, millennials were known as Generation Y, since
they are the generation that follows Generation X.
As their name suggests, millennials are known for being born near the very end of
the last millennium. It was during the millennials’ childhoods and teenage years that
technological advancements revolutionized the world we live in. Think of all the many
aspects of life affected or even controlled by the internet—millennials came of age at the
same time all these changes were happening.
Millennial Characteristics
✓ Millennials are good at accepting
change.
✓ Millennials are curious.
✓ Millennials value teamwork.
✓ Millennials like feedback.
✓ Millennials visit public libraries
more regularly than other age
groups.

Industrial Revolution
Industrial Revolution, in modern history, the process of change from an agrarian
and handicraft economy to one dominated by industry and machine manufacturing. These
technological changes introduced novel ways of working and living and fundamentally
transformed society.

Web 2.0: Dynamic Web Pages
Internet is a vital tool to our modern lives.
When the World Wide Web was invented, most
pages were Static (the page is “as is” and
cannot be manipulated by user).
The content is also the same for all users. This
is referred to as Web 1.0.

In 2017,
58% of the population in the Philippines have internet access (Global average 50%
and SEA Region is 53%)
52% of the population are mobile active social media users (Global 34% and SEA
region is 42%)

“The Selfiest Cities around the World” of 2013 places two cities from the Philippines
in the top 1 and top 9 spots according to Time Magazine. We have Makati and Pasig,
Philippines (258 selfie – 100,000 people) and Cebu City, Philippines.

Web 2.0 (Dynamic) is the evolution of Web 1.0

by adding web pages – the user is able to see a
website differently than others.
Users can also comment and create user
accounts.
Example: social networking sites, blogs, wikis,
video sharing sites, hosted services and web
applications.

Features of Web 2.0

1. Folksonomy – allows users to categorize and classify/ arrange
information chosen keywords (e.g. tagging/hashtag). Popular social
networking sites uses tags that start with pound sign (#)).

2. Rich User Experience – content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s

input. (e.g. modifying personal information on social
media account)

3. User Participation – the owner of the website is not the only

one who is able to put content. Others users comments, reviews,
and evaluation. (e.g. Amazon.com, online stores)
4. Long Tail – services that are offered on demand rather than on a
one-time purchase. (Data plans – time spent or amount of bandwidth)

5. Software as Service – user will subscribe to software only when

needed rather than purchasing them. (e.g. Google Drive – Docs or
Sheets) It allows you to “rent” a software for a minimal fee.

6. Mass Participation – diverse information sharing through universal

web access. Since most users can use the Internet, Web 2.0’s content is
based on people from various cultures.

Web 3.0 and Semantic Web

The Semantic Web is a movement led by World Wide Web

Consortium (W3C). The term as coined by the inventor of the World
Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee. Lee also noted that the Semantic
Web is a component for Web 3.0.

According to W3C, “The Semantic Web provides a common framework that

allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and the
community boundaries.”
The aim of Web 3.0 is to have machines understand the user’s preferences to be
able to deliver when content specifically targeting the user.
Example:
Web 2.0 – topmost result from several users
Web 3.0 – studies personal preferences and individual users
The Internet is able to predict possible answers by “learning” from the previous choices

Web 3.0 is yet to be fully realized because of several problems:

1. Compatibility – HTML files and current web browsers could not support Web 3.0.
2. Security – The user’s security is also in question since the machine is saving his or
her preferences.
3. Vastness – The WWW already contains billions of web pages.
4. Vagueness – Certain words are imprecise. The words “old” and “small” would depend
on the user
5. Logic – Since the machines use logic, there are certain limitations for a computer to
be able to predict what the user is referring to at a given time.

Trends in ICT

1.Convergence – Technological convergence is the synergy of

technological advancements to work on similar goal or task. It is
the use of several technologies to accomplish a task. Example:
Cloud Technologies using LTE (long Term Evolution)

2. Social Media - It is a website application, or online channel that enables web users to
create, co-create, discuss, modify, and exchange user-generated documents.
According to Nielsen, a global information and measurement company, Internet
users spend more time in social media sites than any other types of sites. With this,
more and more advertisers use social media to promote their product.

a. Social networks – These are sites

that allow you to connect with other
people with the same interests or
background. Set up profile, add people,
groups and share content
Example: Facebook and Google+

b. Bookmarking Sites - These sites that allow

you to store and manage links to various websites
and resources. Users can search and create tags.
Example: StumbleUpon, Pinterest and bitly
c. Social News – These are sites that allow users to post their own news items or links
to other news sources. The users can post and comment. Example: reddit and Digg

d. Media Sharing - These are sites that

allows you to upload and share media
content like images, music, video.
Additional social features like liking,
commenting, and having user profiles.
Example: Flickr, Youtube, and Instagram

e. Microblogging- These are sites that focus

on short updates from the user. Those
subscribed to the user will be able to receive
these updates.
Examples: Twitter and Plurk

f. Blogs and Forums – These websites

allow users to post their content. Users are
able to comment.
Example: Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr

3. Mobile Technologies
The popularity of smartphones and tablets has taken major rise over the years. This is
because of the devices’ capability to do task that were originally found on personal
computers. Also, mobile devices use different Operating System.

4. Assistive Media
Assistive media is a nonprofit service designed to help people who have visual and
reading impairments. A database of audio recording is used to read to the user. Website:
http://assistivemedia.org.

5. Cloud Computing
Distributed computing on the internet or delivery of
computing service over the internet. Example: Gmail,
Yahoo!
