Read this passage and answer questions 71 to 80. (20 marks)

There once lived a boy named Ben in a small village. He used to attend the village
school but stopped when his parents could no longer afford to send him. He filted his days
playing football and dreaming of the day he could do so in the city.

One morning, Ben was heading for a game of football when it started pouring. He
ran to the nearest shelter he could find, which happened to be the doorway of the only large
house in the village. Sitting down on the steps, he gazed at the falling raindrops and soon
started to cry. For many minutes, he wept as the storm thundered overhead, masking his
wails. Suddenly, the door behind him opened and a lady emerged, all dressed to go out.

"What's going on?" Mrs Ho, the owner of the house, said sternly. Ben wiped his
eyes and stammered out an apology for using the doorway as a shelter, but she cut him 10
short. "Why aren't you in school? Why are you crying?" she asked.
Ben answered truthfully, "l don't go to school anymore. l'm sad because I wish to
play football in the city, but it's becoming clear to me that it is an impossible dream."
Mrs Ho studied Ben carefully, taking in his ragged clothes and torn shoes, then said,
"l'm trying to sort out my thousands of books so that I can open a public library in the village. 15
Help me with this task and l'll help you fulfil your dream."

Ben agreed eagerly. Mrs Ho took him to a room full of books and told him to read
the first three chapters of each book so that he could put each book in the correct category.
After Mrs Ho left the room, Ben thought, "Why read three chapters? Just the title would tell
me what sort of book it is." So he began, thinking he was very hardworking indeed when at 20
times he read a page or two in addition to the title.

When lunchtime arrived, Mrs Ho dismissed Ben's proud declaration that he had
categorised fifty books. With fury in her voice, she said, "These aren't right! Casf/es of
Europe is not a history book! lt's a travel book!"

Ben realised there was no short cut to be had and started reading three chapters 25
of each book as instructed. Many times, he became interested in what he was reading and
went on to read the whole book. But the job was very time-consuming and whenever he
gazed round at the unfinished work, he would feel resentful towards Mrs Ho. lt took him
five long years to complete the task. The day he left for the city, he said goodbye to Mrs Ho
at her public library with great bitterness in his heart. 30

When Ben arrived at the city, he discovered he could play football for the university
if he first sat for an entrance test, He passed the test and in the four years that followed,
enjoyed himself playing football while studying hard. On the day of his graduation, a
classmate marvelled, "lsn't it amazing how a poor village boy like you managed to do so
well? What an extraordinary amount of luck you must have had!" 35

A professor who was standing nearby commented, "[ remember we were very
impressed with your entrance test results. We've never had an applicant who could write
such logical and persuasive essays! Your village teacher must have been very good."

Ben was taken aback. He had thought he owed his achievement purely to his own
hard work at university but now he realised how Mrs Ho had paved the way for his success. 40

The next day, he surprised Mrs Ho by appearing at her library, "Words cannot
express my gratitude," he told her. "The only repayment I can think of is to help other
children just as you've helped me."

Gesturing at the children clustered around the neat rows of shelves, Mrs Ho replied
with a smile, "Don't you know, you've already done so?" 45

You will hear a teacher instructions for a oame.

Listen up, we're going to play a game. Get into groups of four and stand in your lane.
Each team has a basket of bean bags and a hula hoop further down the lane. When I blow
the whistle, the first member has to run to the basket and grab a bean bag. Then, he will
run to the hula hoop, step into it and throw the bean bag. Aim for the space between the
two lines at the end of the lane. Once the bean bag is thrown, the next member will run to
get another bean bag and join the first member inside the hoop. lt will become a tight
squeeze with more members inside the hoop, but you may stick a leg or both hands out of
the hoop. However, if both your feet are out of the hoop, you'll be disqualified and have to
leave the game. At the end of the game, we'll count the number of members left inside the
hoop and the number of bean bags scored - the more, the better!

You will hear an advertisement on three kinds of boat rides alono the Sinoa River.

Visit the Singa River for its many attractions including the famous Craft Market. The fastest
way to travel from Star Pier to Craft Market is by the Speedy Ferryboat. lt covers every stop
along the river. lf you'd like a more leisurely cruise on a traditional bumboat, choose the
Magical Experience. lt takes a similar route as the ferryboat. Enjoy free drinks as you gaze
upon beautiful landmarks such as the century-old Tess Hotel, though the bumboat won't be
making a stop there.

For a truly unique experience, go for the Froggie ride! This takes place on a special boat
with wheels that will allow you to travel on land and water. Besides cruising along the Singa
River, you'll get to admire the mix of modern and historical buildings in the city area as well.
The tour costs $28 per adult and $18 per child. There's a promotion in October on
weekdays, excluding Fridays, children get a special discount and a Froggie toy. So, don't

Gopal: ll Hi, Siu Mei. After attending a talk on time management at the student care
centre near our school, I think we'd better start planning for the school camp
even though it's still some time away. lf you look at the programme, except for
the aft exhibition at the community club, we have to find venues for the various
activities. Mr Riduan has reserved the classrooms for our group activities and
the hall for games. Where can we carry out outdoor cooking?

Mei:
Siu ll How about the open field, Gopal, so the smell of the food will not affect others?
l
Gopal: ll Good idea. On a windy day, however, it'l[ be difficult for the solid fuel to catch
fire. What about the basketball court which has a row of trees blocking out the
wind?

\- Siu Mei: ll I prefer the assembly area near the wash basins at the canteen, so pupils can
wash their hands easily.

Gopal: ll Good thinking! But there're many pupils walking about at the assembly area
and someone might knock over our makeshift stove.

Siu Mei: ll All right, we'll go with your suggestion then. Hmm ... Do we need to bring
anything from home?

Gopal: ll Of course! lnstant noodles?

Siu Mei: ll Not exactly healthy? What about wrapping potatoes in aluminium foil and
dumping them in the fire to cook?

Gopal: ll Sounds easy enough. Let's get everyone to bring an egg as well.

Siu Mei: ll Bring two, to be on the safe side. Someone is sure to break an egg.

Gopal: ll Haha. You're so rightl

Siu Mei: ll And if we bring a tomato, we can make a nutritious soup with egg,

Gopal: ll Okay.

You will hear a news report on a new addition to an aquarium.

Yesterday, Ted Aquarium unveiled its latest addition - the hagfish. Shaped like an eel, the
hagfish belongs to the class of fish without jaws, lt has a reputation for being disgusting
because it produces a large amount of sticky slime when alarmed by a predator. The
hagfish then ties itself into a knot and passes the knot down its body to wipe the slime
away, escaping from the predator in the process.

The hagfish is also known to be disgusting as it largely feeds on dead creatures. This
helps to keep the ocean ecosystem healthy. Mr Tony Ang, a manager at Ted Aquarium,
says, "People tend to notice the cute and pretty creatures and neglect the ugly ones.
Therefore, Ted Aquarium thought of featuring the hagfish to show that even those which
are not appealing play a role in the ocean ecosystem."

You will hear a radio interview with a music lover,

Radio Host: You are listening to "Love of My Life". Today, we've invited Mr Khoo Tong
San who recently won the Pop Music competition. Mr Khoo, please share
with us how you first found your love for music.

Mr Khoo: Well, my parents weren't great musicians, but when I was ten, my granny
gave me a music player that I could bring about with me. Since I was an only
child, music became my good companion, accompanying me wherever I
went, right up to bedtime.

Radio Host: So what do you listen to?

Mr Khoo: Pretty much everything. I love discovering new songs. Once while I was at a
clinic waiting to see the doctor, I heard this song playing. Though the tune
was simple, I couldn't get it out of my head and was still humming it when I
saw the doctor. He was amused and said he loved the song too. ln fact, it
was sung by his favourite singer.

Radio Host: You must share this song with me someday! So, Mr Khoo, you told me
earlier that you're a foftunate man. Why is that so?

Mr Khoo: Well, l'm not well-off and one of my greatest regrets is not being able to
afford music lessons. But perhaps listening to all the great music has given
me a good sense of melody and rhythm, so I can play the keyboard even
without knowing how to read music notes. This has certainly made up for all
the regrets in my life.

You wilt hear a about two tribes.

There were two tribes who lived close to each other. Tribe Anu, situated on a gentle hill
slope, had feftile soil which enabled apple trees to thrive and all kinds of crops to grow.
Tribe Bika, on the other hand, lived on a vast grassy plain where cattle grazed. The two
tribes were separated by a river that snaked through the land. Their ancestors had built a
bridge across it that men and women would often cross to trade crops and meat.

Sadly, the cordial relationship was broken when the chiefs of the two tribes had an
argument over whose tribe was better. Unable to resolve the quarrel, the two chiefs ordered
their people to cease all contact and anyone found crossing the bridge would be severely
punished. They even had guards patrolling the area to ensure that no one crossed the
bridge.

One day, the chief of Tribe Bika came home early to find his little girl, Nala, munching on an
apple. He demanded to know how she got the apple. Trembling with fear, the little girl
confessed, "When the guard was away, I sneaked across the bridge to play with Kira from
Tribe Anu. She gave me the apple."

Gazing at the teary eyes of his beloved daughter, the chief of Tribe Bika sighed and sent
her away with a strict warning not to do it again. The half-eaten apple was left on the table-
rosy and delicious-looking. Unable to resist the temptation, the chief of Tribe Bika picked it
up and took a big bite. The juicy sweetness of the fruit filled his mouth as he thought about
what he and his people were missing.

The next morning, the chief of Tribe Bika visited Tribe Anu with a selection of meat as a
peace offering. He said, "You have your strengths and we have ours, but together we'll
have so much more!"

TEXT 7

You will hear an extract from a talk.

Do you often forget things? According to some studies, forgetting is not really a loss of
information. lt has more to do with the way our mind stores or retrieves information. By
'retrieve', I mean how our mind regains or fetches information. Some scientists compare the
human mind to a computer chip. While it can hold a large amount of information, there is a
limit. To make way for "new information", the mind reconstructs the information that has
been stored from time to time. This is why some details may get blurry over time and our
memories fade. However, something famtliar like a song or a photograph may trigger our
mind and bring back certain memories.

So, what can we do to overcome forgetfulness? Other than writing down a list of "things to
do", we can also creaie a visuai clue. Let's say you have to buy a red ring fiie from the
bookshop tomorrow. You can put a red sticker on your watch so when you look at it, it'll
remind you of the task that needs to be done. A little imagination helps too. For example, if
you have a Science test on Friday, you can imagine your Science teacher frying an egg as
the word 'fry' can help you remember 'Friday' better.

Ming and Peter were best friends. They had been neighbours for many years and

were inseparable. On weekends, they would usually be at each other's homes to catch

up on their homework or at the community club playing badminton.

However, after Ming moved away last month, there were fewer occasions for the

two friends to meet up. Peter, especially, felt as if he had been left behind.

"Why don't you arrange a study session with Ming at the library?" Peter's mother

suggested.

"Oh, l'm sure Ming is too busy making friends in his new neighbourhood to want

to meet me," Peter sulked.

Just then, the phone rang. lt was Ming asking Peter if he would like to go over to

his new flat for tea! Peter was elated and immediately turned to his mother to ask for

permission.

Before Peter could do so, his mother smiled and nodded, signalling her consent.

Peter's eyes lit up as he enthusiastically resumed his conversation with Ming and told

him the fabulous news.

Henry loved to eat. His ideal meal consisted of burgers and French fries, and lots

advised him to eat healthily and take up a sport.

"But I hate getting all sweaty and smellyl" Henry whined when Jenny tried to get

him to go jogging.

"You can't continue eating like this and not exercise!" Jenny chided. "You'll bear

the consequences one day."

lndeed, Jenny's prediction came true. One evening, Henry was studying for his

Science test at home while snacking on chocolates and potato chips. When he got out of

his seat to go to the kitchen, he felt nauseous and suddenly threw up. Forlunately, their

father was at home and he took Henry to the hospital immediately.

The doctor examined Henry and prescribed him some medicine. She also told

him that he needed to watch his diet and recommended that he exercise regularly.

Henry took the doctor's advice as he had learnt his lesson.
