CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

writing is one of language skills presented in the teaching learning process of


English. A language is part of the culture of a people and the chief means by
which the members of society communicate. On the other hand, language is a
system of structurally related elements for the coding of meaning (Richards and
Theodore 2001:20). Now days, language education is very important for
everyone. Not only for those who have a perfect body, for children with special
needs also until senior high school students have to learn the language of science.

Moreover, the English language which is one of the international language of


the world. However, it is not easy for those Indonesian students to learn English.
They need methods, media, or the right strategies for teaching and learning
English. English is a language that is considered very important at this time.
English is a bridge that connects the communication between people worldwide.
English is one kind of foreign language. All people in the world use English as a
second or foreign language. According to Harmer (2007: 11) “Many people learn
English because they think it will be useful in some way for international
communication”. They must be able to speak English. They need English in their
daily activities. Therefore, Indonesian people must study English because they
know that English is an international language. By using English, people are able
to improve their ability in understanding many kinds of knowledge.

writing is one of language skills presented in the teaching learning process of


English.Writing is a process to produce language. We can take more time to think
and choose words in order to express our ideas thought and feeling, then we make
a revision if it is not clear to express what we intend to write. It is also needs
attention because it needs its own principles and method it requiring mastery not
only of grammatical a rhetorical devices but also of the conceptual and judgment.
For that reason, it needs practice to improve that skill. In advance, it is a
physiological activity of the language user to put information in the written text.
Writing is an activity to create a records or information on a medium by using
a script. Writing usually done on paper by using tools such as a pen or pencil.
Richards and Renandya (2002) mention that difficulties in writing arise not only
in generating and reorganizing ideas but also in translating the ideas so that the
readers can be easily able to understand about what is the writing about.

In addition, writing is one of the language skills that should be mastered by


students. In writing skill, the students have to master vocabulary and know how to
use grammar in making texts or sentences. It is an important skill because it will
be applied in many aspect of life. Through writing, people are supposed to be able
to express their ideas in writing form. There are many ways to express writing and
one of them is through a text. There are many text types taught in Senior High
School. Each text has different social function, schematic structures, and language
features. As Richard and Renandya (2002: 303) state, writing is the most difficult
skill for second language learners to be mastered.

According to Harmer (2007) “Writing is a way to produce language and express


idea, feeling, and opinion”. It means that writing is a process that what people write is
often heavily influenced by the constraints of genres, and then these elements have to
be presented in learning activities. There are many types of texts must be mastered in
writing. In the tenth grade syllabus, one of the types writing is descriptive text.

Descriptive text taught by the teacher to give information to the students about
how the students describe something, such as people, place, animals and so on
specifically. Most of the students faced difficulties when writing. It cause they did not
have any ideas what they have to be written although they have been given a topic
from the teacher. For example, when the writer wrote the word “My Self” and asked
to the students to describe it, they spent much time to describe it and most of students
just keep silent for a few minutes. Therefore, to make the students more interested and
to stimulate the students’ motivation in learning writing process, using media is
recommended to deliver the material in teaching learning process. Brown (2001: 2)
proposes that media are physical equipment or utensil for instruction. Media can be
used to motivate students in learning. The use of Picture Memes 9Gag can help and
motivate the students toward their writing skill. There are some reasons that picture
series can help the students learning process.
Based on this statement, it is clearly stated that memes 9Gag help the students
easily to get information, and help the students work with grammar and vocabulary.
Moreover, the picture memes 9gag series can be applied in English learning teaching
since it helps students to comprehend the text, get information easily and helps
students toward working with grammar and vocabulary.

Based on the observation of the writer in the tenth grade at SMK DARUTTAIBIN
PABUARAN class X Pemasaran, on Monday, January 27 th, 2020. The writer
interviewed some students in the class from the interview results were students having
difficulty writing English words due to lack of vocabulary, students also had difficulty
in composing good English sentences and right. if given a difficult writing task for
students to write a word one of the factors is students rarely bring the dictionary to
school, not only are not able to write students also have difficulty in pronunciation
and wrong in interpreting English words. In some of the things the writer finds in
students writing skill in text descriptive, there are often students who are not intersted
in writing about something and power of the students imaginations that are ability to
focus on decribing something that will be describing something that will be
descriptive. Most students prefer reading and listening rather than having to write text
descriptive students need a good imagination so that they can write carefully to what
they describe. Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in analyzing the
writing skills of students at SMK Daruttaibin Pabuaran class X Pemasaran, with the
title "An Analysis Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text Using Memes 9Gag”.

Focus and Sub Focus of The Study

B. Identification of The Problem


Based on the background of the problem above the writer conclude
several factors or problem identification of problem as follows:
1) Students having difficulty writing English words.
2) Students lack vocabulary so students become confused in
writing sentences.
3) students have difficulty interpreting English words.
4) Students rarely bring the dictionary to school.
5) students also have difficulty in pronunciation.
C. Formulation of The Problem
Based on the background of the research above, the formaltion of the
research is:
1. What are the factors that influence students' writing ability in
descriptive text?
2. what the aspect involves of students writing ability in descriptive text
using memes 9Gag?
D. The Objective of The study
1. To identify factor that influence students’ writing ability in descriptive
text.
2. To know aspect involves of students’ writing ability in descriptive tetx
using memes 9Gag.
E. The Significances of The Study
The significance of this research can be viewed from both theoritical
and partical aspects, as describe below:

1. Theoritically

This research will provide information and research results that are
expected to enrich the ability of writing in teaching English and add
references for further research about the correlation between students
writing skill in descriptive text and Memes.

2. Partically

a. For teachers

Giving motivation to the teacher for more increasing learning activities


and varied until the students motivated for more learning english, espeially
writing skill.

b. For students

This study is expected to give advantage to the students about the


usually problem that faced in writing skill.
c. For other researchers

The results of this study are expected to provide information for further
researchers who have the same research.
