Clicker Question 1

If Av = 0 is inconsistent, then the columns of A are linearly

independent.

[A] True [B] False

This is an absurd question because a homogeneous system Av = 0

is NEVER inconsistent–we never ask if a system is consistent to
answer whether the columns of a matrix are linearly independent!

Clicker Question 2

Is
 the linear transformation
 determined by the matrix
3 2 −7
onto? (Hint: no row reduction is necessary)
5 6 −9

[A] Yes [B] No

The answer is YES: without explicit computation we can see that

there would be a pivot position in each row, so T is onto.

Clicker Question 3

8 7
Is the linear transformation determined by the matrix  6 5 
0 0
onto? (Hint: no row reduction is necessary)

[A] Yes [B] No

The answer is NO–A matrix with more rows than columns can
never have a pivot position in every row, so T cannot be onto.
 
1
OR we can easily see that the vector  1  is not in the column
1
space of the matrix, so T cannot be onto.

Clicker Question 4

Is
 the linear transformation
 determined by the matrix
3 2 −7
1-1? (Hint: no row reduction is necessary)
5 6 −9

[A] Yes [B] No

The answer is NO–a matrix with more columns than rows cannot
have a pivot position in every column, so T cannot be 1-1.

Clicker Question 5

8 7
Is the linear transformation determined by the matrix  6 5 
0 0
1-1? (Hint: no row reduction is necessary)

[A] Yes [B] No

The answer is YES–since the columns of the matrix are linearly

independent by inspection, the linear transformation is 1-1.
