Topic: Subject-verb Agreement ____________________________________________________ Learning Objectives *To understand the concept of subject-verb agreement and its correct usage. * To frame sentences using proper subject /verb agreement. Rules of Subject verb agreement I. In a sentence, the verb changes according to the subject. If the subject is singular , the verb will be singular. The subject is plural , the verb will be plural. Eg: 1. The child drinks milk. The children drink milk. 2. Rohan likes cartoons. They like cartoons. 3. Tom is my friend. Tom and Jerry are my friends. II. When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are joined by ‘and’ the verb that follows the subject is a plural verb. Eg: 1. My father and mother do the housework together on Sundays. 2. Arun and Arjun play in the park. III. Each and every take a singular verb Eg: 1. Each boy in the class owns a motorbike. 2.Every child has attended the event. IV. A collective noun always takes a singular verb. Eg: 1. The crowd is moving forward. 2. A bouquet of flowers was offered to the guest. V. If two subjects connected with “or”/either-or/neither-nor,then the verb that follows is singular if the subject placed closer to it is singular and the verb that follows is plural, if the subject placed closer to it is plural. Eg: 1 . My aunt or my uncle is arriving by train today. 2. Neither Juan nor Carmen is available. 3. Either my son or my daughters are attending the function. 4. Neither Tinu nor his friends have gone for vacation. Concept Check Complete the following sentences with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets. 1.
