Daily Digital Digest at the United Nations Summit

of the Future
New York, 21 September - This document offers key highlights from the Office of the
UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology (OSET) at the Summit of the Future.

“The Global Digital Compact must be a blueprint for closing digital divides, and the
first universal agreement on Artificial Intelligence – laying the foundations for a
global platform centered at the UN that can bring all actors together.”
– António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

New Pledges for a Better Digital Future

For the first time, leaders, tech companies, activists, and UN agencies gathered for
one goal: securing a better digital future for all. Co-convened by ITU, the Office of the
UN Secretary-General’s Tech Envoy (OSET), and UNDP, the Summit of the Future
Action Day brought together over 500 policymakers, tech executives, academics and
civil society leaders to address digital cooperation challenges:
• ITU and UNDP spotlighted new pledges to boost digital infrastructure and skills
development globally, with a focus on enhancing connectivity in hard-to-reach
areas. Notable commitments include Brazil’s plan to connect all 138,000 public
schools by 2026, and Nigeria’s efforts to improve digital services across local
government areas.
• In the segment convened by OSET, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced
support to capacity building: “I am proud to announce our global AI Opportunity
Fund. This will invest $120 million to make AI education and training available in
communities around the world”.

Beyond the Main Stage

• At the Digital Commons for a More Inclusive and Resilient World event, co-
organized by the Wikimedia Foundation, open-source leaders emphasized
how Digital Commons can power secure, inclusive digital systems. After all,
everyone uses Wikipedia—proof that democratized digital tools can benefit us
all.
• Roundtable on Africa AI Governance: Bridging North-South Perspectives for
Inclusive AI, co-hosted by the World Bank, Rwanda, and Korea, and co-
facilitated by CEIP and UN OSET, distilled priorities for enabling responsible AI
in Africa and foster North-South collaboration. Sangbu Kim, World Bank VP
for Digital Transformation said: “Africa stands at a pivotal moment in AI
development. To fully realize AI’s potential, we must address regulatory gaps,
invest in infrastructure, and foster local talent.”
Earlier this week
The much-anticipated Governing AI for Humanity report from the Secretary-General’s
High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence was released on 19 September. It
provides 7 key recommendations for the international community to act on:
• Press Release
• UN Secretary-General's Video Message
