ABOUT THE GUEST

I would like to introduce our today's guest. Mr. Sanjay Apturkar sir, he is an associate scientist
in Maharashtra remote sensing application center (MRSAC) Nagpur since march 2008 till the
date.
And also he has worked as a project scientist in the year 2007-2008, center for atmospheric
science, Indian institute of technology, Houzkhas at New Delhi (ITD).

He has worked as a technical officer - GIS in the year 2007(January to June).

Waterbed organization trust (WOTR) at Ahmed nagar.

He has also worked as a project scientist in the year 2003-2006, MP remote sensing
application center,

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In this morning session we gained knowledge about the Remote Sensing, GPS, GIS
application, he gave us information about the future needs of civil engineering with surveying
field. He taught us a concept to be implemented and gave us ideas to do the future works.
Introduction to Remote Sensing, GPS, and GIS
The lecture began with an overview of each technology. Remote sensing involves
acquiring information about an object or area from a distance, often through satellite or aerial
imagery. It allows engineers to gather large amounts of data over vast areas, which would
otherwise be difficult and time-consuming to survey manually. GPS is a satellite-based
navigation system that provides precise location information, while GIS is a system that
captures, stores, analyzes, and presents spatial and geographic data.

Remote Sensing
The lecture began with an introduction to the basic concepts of Remote Sensing,
which involves the acquisition of information about an object or area from a distance,
typically from satellite or aerial platforms. The speaker explained how Remote Sensing is
crucial for monitoring environmental changes, urban planning, disaster management, and
agricultural productivity. Different types of sensors, such as optical and radar sensors, were
discussed, highlighting their significance in capturing data across different spectral bands.

Global Positioning System

The session then moved on to Global Positioning Systems (GPS), where the speaker
explained the mechanics of GPS technology and its widespread use in navigation, surveying,
and location-based services. The importance of GPS in everyday applications, such as Google
Maps and vehicle tracking, was emphasized. The speaker also shed light on the future of GPS
technology, mentioning advancements like multi-constellation systems (such as GLONASS
and Galileo) that are improving accuracy and reliability.

Geographic Information System

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) formed the crux of the lecture, as the speaker
illustrated how GIS integrates data from both Remote Sensing and GPS to analyze spatial
information. The application of GIS in various industries, including environmental
management, urban planning, and resource management, was explored. The speaker
presented real-world examples, such as the use of GIS in flood risk assessment, infrastructure
development, and agriculture, where precision farming techniques rely on geospatial data for
optimizing crop yield and resource management.

Conclusion
The expert lecture provided an insightful look into how Remote Sensing, GPS, and GIS
technologies are becoming indispensable in civil engineering. By adopting these
technologies, engineers can improve the accuracy and efficiency of their work, ensuring
better infrastructure planning and environmental stewardship. This lecture was a valuable
experience, giving students a glimpse into the practical applications of their studies and
inspiring them to consider careers in geospatial technology within civil engineering. This
session not only expanded our understanding of geospatial tools but also underscored their
importance in sustainable development and modern infrastructure projects.
