Other Forms of Philippine Theater
1. Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and
dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated
through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.
Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished
by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements.
Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.
2. Performance art is an artwork or art exhibition created through actions executed by the artist or other
participants. It may be live, through documentation, spontaneously or written, presented to a public in a Fine
Arts context, traditionally interdisciplinary. Also known as artistic action, it has been developed through the
years as a genre of its own in which art is presented live. It had an important and fundamental role in 20th
century avant garde art.
Performing arts in the Philippines may include dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre, magic,
illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry, circus arts, performance art, recitation and public speaking. There is
also a specialized form of fine art, in which the artists perform their work live to an audience.
It involves four basic elements: time, space, body, and presence of the artist, and the relation between
the creator and the public. The actions, generally developed in art galleries and museums, can take place in the
street, any kind of setting or space and during any time period. Its goal is to generate a reaction, sometimes
with the support of improvisation and a sense of aesthetics. The themes are commonly linked to life
experiences of the artist themselves, or the need of denunciation or social criticism and with a spirit of
transformation.
3. DRAMA SIMBOLIKO
The term drama simboliko refers to allegorical drama, especially that which was called “seditious” by
the American Insular Government in the first decade. Most of these plays were banned, and their
playwrights jailed, because their“ unmistakable tendency,” the American-dominated Supreme Court
decision said, was to “inculcate a spirit of hatred and enmity against the American people and the
Government of the United States in the Philippines, and…incite the people of the Philippine Islands to
open and armed resistance to the constituted authorities, and to induce them to conspire together for
the secret organization of armed forces…for the purpose of overthrowing the present Government and
setting up another in its stead.”
It was the Filipino artists’ intelligent and creative strategy of using symbols and metaphors, not quite
discernible by an oppressive, abusive, dictatorial government, but quite familiar and understandable to
Filipinos. Therefore, these made the latter aware of their oppressors’ abuses and they feel the need to unite,
overthrow the ruling elite, and achieve total freedom & independence.
It is when the authorities suspect, discover and confirm the real intentions of the play and the artists,
that the play is labelled SEDITIOUS and the artists are then charged with sedition. Then, the play gets
banned; the artists are imprisoned, tortured, or murdered because it is said that they inculcate a spirit of
hatred that induces people to conspire against the status quo.
