CLASSIFICATION OF

FINFISH
EXPLAIN THE BASIS FOR CLASSIFYING FINFISH
OBJECTIVES:

• To provide a comprehensive overview of taxonomical

hierarchy.
• To explain the basis for finfish classification
What are Finfish?
• Finfish is a term used to separate true fish from shellfish
• Have fins and backbones.

Thunnus maccoyii
Neocaridina divini
TAXONOMY
Carolus Linnaeus

• Taxonomy is a practice of identifying different

organisms, classifying them into categories
and naming them.
TAXONOMIC HIERARCHY
• Taxonomic hierarchy is the arrangement of various
categories in successive levels of biological
classification. Each of this level or hierarchy is
called the taxonomic category or rank.
FIVE KINGDOM
CLASSIFICATION
Proposed by R.H. Whittaker in 1996

• KINGDOM MONERA
• KINGDOM PROTISTA
• KINGDOM FUNGI
• KINGDOM PLANTAE
• KINGDOM ANIMALIA
TAXONOMIC HIERARCHY
OF COMMON CARP
BIOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE
• It is an information retrieval system conveying information
about diversity and relationships. It was introduced by
Carlos Linnaeus.

BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE
• Binomial nomenclature is a formal system for naming species, introduced
by Carl Linnaeus. This system assigns each species a unique name
composed of two parts: the generic name (genus) and the specific
name (species or specific epithet). For example, in the name Homo
sapiens, Homo represents the genus, and sapiens represents the specific
species.
GENERAL RULES
• Latin language
• Consist of a genus and a species
• Generic always begin with a capital letter
• Species name always begin with lower-case letter
• Both names must be underlined or italicized.

• Example: Chanos chanos

BASIS FOR CLASSIFYING FINFISH

• Skeletal structures
• Habitat
• Anatomy
SKELETAL STRUCTURE
(bony and cartilaginous fish)
SKELETAL STRUCTURE
Cartilaginous fishes are cold-blooded (poikilotherms) animals. Like most other
fish, they also lack the system to regulate their internal body temperature. The
skeleton of cartilaginous fishes is made up of cartilage. Only the teeth of this
species and rarely the vertebrae are calcified. Sharks, skates, chimaeras and
rays make up the group of Chondrichthyes..
SKELETAL STRUCTURE
Osteichthyes is a class of jawed fishes having a bony endoskeleton. It is the
largest class of vertebrates and includes a diverse group of marine and
freshwater bony fishes.
HABITAT
(freshwater and salwater)
HABITAT
Freshwater fish are found within the worlds less salty waterways such as streams, rivers, and
ponds. Freshwater fish tend to be less "fishy" in flavor. Top freshwater fish are listed below:

• Catfish - known for a mild taste with a slightly denser texture making it less flaky
and more versatile to cook.
• Trout - Referred to as "chicken of fish" because of its unoffensive and mild
flavors.
• Salmon- most notable for its orange/red color and high omega-3 fatty acid
content. Mild flavor with rich texture.
HABITAT
Saltwater fish are found in oceans or in the areas of water that mix with fresh and salt water.
Some fish, such as salmon, are considered anadromous, meaning they live their lives in both
fresh and salt water.
• Anchovies: small fish that are often used as a pizza topping in the U.S.
• Sardines: Small fish, typically sold in the U.S. in cans are a staple in
Mediterranean cuisine.
• Snapper: Rosey colored skin distinguishes this one from the others.
ANATOMY
(mouths and fins)
ANATOMY
Mouth position: Terminal, superior, sub-terminal, or protrusible.
ANATOMY
.

Terminal Mouth: - Terminal mouths are located

in the middle of the head and point straight
forward; both jaws are of the same length.
Example Danios, Rasbora, Putnius, etc.
ANATOMY

Superior Mouth: - The superior mouth is

oriented upwards and the lower
jaw is longer than the upper jaw.

Hatchetfish
ANATOMY
.

Sub-terminal Mouth: - The inferior mouth is

turned downward. The lower jaw is shorter than
the upper jaw. They often possess barbels.

Catfish
ANATOMY
.
Protrusible Mouth: It allows them to extend
their reach when attempting to snatch prey or
food particles.

Tilapia
ANATOMY
Fin types and counts; Dorsal, anal, pectoral, pelvic, and caudal fin.

Fin: Fins are appendages on the body of fish.

ANATOMY
.
Pectoral Fins: Occur in pair and are located on
each side. They create a dynamic lifting force that
assist fish, such as sharks, in maintaining depth.
ANATOMY
.
Pelvic Fins: Occurs in pair and are found on the
ventral side of the fish. They assist fish in going
up and down in water, turning and stopping.
ANATOMY
.
Dorsal Fin: Is a single fin present on the dorsal side of the body. It
protects the fish against rolling, assists in sudden turns and stops.
When the top ray is connected with membrane they are called soft,
else they are called hard spines.
ANATOMY
Caudal Fin: Located at the end of the fish. provides the power to move
a fish forward. It also acts like a rudder to help a fish steer.
