ETAP WORKSHOP NOTES

Photovoltaic Library Modeling

1. Open a new OTI file and place a PV module from Tools:

2. Note the data to be modelled. The example is as below:

Kyocera 235GXLPB data sheet
Before creating the library, certain input req for the lib needs to be evaluated (Delta

Voc). For calculating Delta Voc, the Photovoltaic cell’s I vs V curve for varying
Irradiance and constant cell temperature is req from the vendor. An example of
the same is given below:

Refer attached excel for the calculation. The Delta Voc value for this Photovoltaic

model is obtained as 0.065180933 which needs to be entered in the library. All

the data are normally available in the vendor datasheet.
3. To model the solar PV we need to create the lib as below:

a. Open Library
b. Click renewable sources
c. Select Photovolatic

4. A PV array library window pops up, click “Add”.

5. Enter manufacturer, reference and link, if available. Click ‘OK’.

6. Model- click Add

7. Enter the Model Number, Max Vdc, type as shown below, which has been taken
from the datasheet. Refer the excel ‘Kyocera’. After which, click ‘OK’

8. Click on ‘Edit Parameters’ as shown below:

9. Now a ‘Edit Parameter’ window pops up. Click on ‘Add’

10. Enter the data obtained from the datasheet as shown below, and press ‘OK’.

11. Close the PV Array Library window. Now assign the library to your panel:

12. Press OK and assign the library for the PV panel.

13. The PV modules are modelled as with 25 parallel section of 173 series
elements totaling to 1016.9 kWdc at 745Vdc.
14. Matching inverter from 625Vdc to 1kV AC modelled to interface the PV array
with the grid.
15. To test the system, we model a grid connected transformer to the inverter PV

system as given below:

Cell Temperature variation for loadflow:

This is based on NOCT( Nominal Operating Cell Temperature) , and the calculation is as given
below:

NOCT 49 degree Celcius

NOCT given above is typical value considered. Typical value considered by ETAP (assumed)
Lsite=Site Solar Radiation for T_cell
896 Watt/sq.m Site Value
calculation
Tambient 20 degree celcius Site Value
NOCT
Lnoct=Solar Radiation for NOCT 800 Watt/sq.m
Value
Tnoct=Temperature considered at NOCT
20 degree celcius
NOCT Value
T_cell =Tambient+(NOCT-Tnoct)*Lsite/Lnoct
T_cell 52.48 degree celcius

Note: Tcell is matching with the result in ETAP.

Run the load flow studies after creating scenario wizard as follows:

Scenario Name Revision Configuration Study Case ID Report Name

1) Max P_Lead_Max GV Base Normal MxPLead_MxGV MaxP_Lead_MaxGV

2) Max P_Lag_MinGV Base Normal MxP_Lag_MnGV MaxP_Lag_MinGV

3) Min P_Lead_Norm GV Base Normal MxPLead_NmGV MaxP_Lead_NormGV

4) Max P_Lag_Norm GV Base Normal MxP_Lag_NmGV MxP_Lag_NormGV

Now, Update the Generation page of Inverter with the following loading categories , while the inverter is
in MVAR mode. This is the maximum Reactive power Inverter provides. Observe the results of each case
after updating the same.
Run the load flow wizards and see the results.

1) Max P_Lead_Max GV 2) Max P_Lag_MinGV

3) Min P_Lead_Norm GV 4) Max P_Lag_Norm GV

Now, Adjust the reactive power from inverter as per the requirement to avoid overloading and for

optimization. The compensation can be also done with compensator capacitor banks/ filters at POI.
Below shows the inverter compensation after adjusting powerfactor in “PF Control” mode.
