Inferring Word Meanings Through Suffixes and Context


Clues

Objective: To enhance your vocabulary and understanding of what you


read by figuring out word meanings with the help of Latin, Greek and
Germanic suffixes.

Infer: When you infer, you make an educated guess or draw a conclusion
from clues or facts that are presented, rather than receiving the
information directly.

Instructions:

1. Read Each Sentence: Carefully read the sentences provided. Each


sentence includes a word that is derived from either a Latin or Greek
suffix.
2. Highlight the Context Clue: Highlight the part of the sentence that
helped you understand the meaning of the bolded word. This might be
a descriptive phrase, a context hint, or a similar usage that relates to
the suffix.
3. Infer the Meaning: Use the context clues from the sentence along
with your knowledge of the suffixes to infer the meaning of the bolded
word.
4. Write Your Answer: Next to each bolded word, write down what you
think the word means. Don’t copy and paste a dictionary
definition, use your own words.
5. Look Up The Word: After writing your definition in your own words,
look up each word to check your answers. copy and paste the
