Experiment No: 01

Experiment Name: Half Wave Rectifier

Objectives:
1. To plot output waveform of the Half Wave Rectifier.
2. To find ripple factor for Half Wave Rectifier using the formulae.
3. To find the efficiency, Vp(rect), Vdc for Half Wave Rectifier.
Theory: A rectifier is a device that transforms a smooth input wave into a
unidirectional wave with a positive average value. A half-wave rectifier allows
current to pass only during the positive portion of the input wave, causing a voltage
drop across the connected resistor. During the negative portion of the wave, the
diode prevents current flow, while a capacitor is linked from the rectifier's output
to the ground. The capacitor rapidly charges at the beginning of each cycle and
gradually discharges its energy through the resistor after the input voltage peaks.
Aparatus:
I. Transformer
II. Resistor
III. Capacitor
IV. Diode(D1N4001)
V. Breadboard
VI. Wires

Graph:

Conclusion: Diodes are primarily employed to convert AC (alternating

current) into DC (direct current) for different electrical applications. This
conversion process is known as rectification, which transforms a smooth
wave into a unidirectional wave. During this process, the first half of the wave
is positive, and when a diode is installed in reverse, it stops the current from
flowing into the negative section of the wave.
