The borehole in the size of 75 mm in diameter was advanced through the overburden
by rotary wash boring method using D-90 drilling rig. Cuttings were removed from
the hole by the circulating water during drilling. Casing in the size of NX was used
during the drilling process.

All the boreholes were initially advanced up to the hard rock level. Thereafter, they
were further advanced in to the hard rock by coring the rock using a double tube core
barrel.

The details of the boreholes, together with the depth to GWT, depth to rock and the
depth of the borehole are given in Table-2 below. All depths are indicated with
respect to a zero datum at top of the borehole.

Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were carried out at 1.0m intervals up to 5.0m and
at 1.5m thereafter to assess the relative densities of the ground materials. This was
done by driving a standard split spoon sampler into undisturbed soil under the impact
of 65 kg hammer falling through a height of 760 mm.

The Standard Penetration Tests were performed in accordance with BS 1377:1990:

Part 9 and the test results are interpreted in the boring logs at the relevant test depths
as shown in Annexure 1.

Disturbed samples of soil were collected both from the SPT split spoon and the
flushed water during drilling.

Ground water level was determined as the depth at which the water level stabilized
inside the borehole.

The area was covered by boreholes BH-01, BH-02, BH-03 and BH-04.

5.1 Sub-surface Conditions

From a study of the borehole logs, it is concluded that the overburden at BH-01 can
be modeled by successive layers as indicated in Table-4 below. All depths are
reported with respect to a zero datum at the top of the borehole as well as in with
respect to MSL.

Similar sub surface conditions were observed at the other borehole locations.

The profile of the sub-surface layering in the area is given as Fig. 2a.

5.2 Quality and Strength of rock mass

The quality of the rock mass was determined by coring through the rock mass. The
results for the Core Recovery (CR) and the Rock Quality Designation (RQD)
obtained are given in Appendix 1. The results for the boreholes in this area are
summarized in Table-5 below.

5.3 Recommendations for Foundations

Taking into consideration the high loads to be transferred from the 28-slab building,
it is recommended that bored and cast in-situ Reinforced Concrete pile foundations,
which are socketed in to the fresh rock be used subject to a minimum pile length of
3m.

In studies on Sri Lankan rocks, it has been found that the rock can be classified into 3
categories as follows:

Category 1 in which CR are low (< 40), and RQD values are small (< 10);

Category 2 in which CR are high (> 40), and RQD values are small (< 20);

Category 3 in which CR are high (> 40), and RQD values are also high (> 20).

At this location, Category 3 type of rock is encountered at depths of rock socket

exceeding 2m.

It is noted that 03 Nos. of rock cores have been tested. Their UCS values range from
19.87 MPa to 50.65 MPa. The average UCS value is 35.49 MPa.

Page 12 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

Reference is given in Appendix 2 for the ultimate end bearing capacity for piles in
rock. These are related to the Rock Category and the Uniaxial Compressive Strength
(UCS) of rock cores.

It is recommended to adopt a net allowable end bearing capacity of 4.7 MPa.

It is also recommended that the carrying capacity in skin friction be considered within
the basement rock. One recommendation for the ultimate skin friction coefficient (fu)
is available in the ICTAD Guidelines (*). As per this reference, fu can be taken as 200
kN/m2.

(*) ICTAD publication ICTAD/DEV/15 on “Guidelines for interpretation of Site

Investigation data for estimating the carrying capacity of piles for the design of bored
and cast in-situ RC piles”.

However, when referring to some other sources, it may appear that the ICTAD
recommendations are conservative. For example, in “Foundations on Rock” (2nd
edition), by Duncan C. Willie, and “Pile Design and Construction Practice” (5th
edition), by M.J. Tomlinson; Duncan C. Willie states that:

“For clean sockets, the allowable side wall shear stress can be related with
unconfined compressive rock strength (UCS in MPa) by the expression (Rowe and
Hermitage):

τa = 0.60 x UCS1/2 / F.S.

A factor of safety of 2.5 relates the ultimate to allowable stress.

According to Williams and Pells due to rock fractures the values of τa shall be
reduced by as much as 40%. Finally the expression becomes τa = 0.15 x UCS1/2.”

Page 13 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

Therefore, if this method is adopted, for average UCS = 35.49 MPa;

The value for τa is 0.89 MPa; i.e. 890 kN/m2.

Therefore when designing the piles, it is recommended that

(i) A minimum of 3m of rock socketing is ensured;
(ii) (L/B) ratio for the rock socket be of the order of 2;
(iii) The allowable net end bearing capacity is 4.7 MPa for initial design;
(iv) The allowable skin friction coefficient (fa) in rock be taken as lying
between 0.2 MPa and 0.89 MPa.

It is recommended that these assumed pile design parameters be checked by carrying

out Pile Load Tests using instrumented Test Piles.

5.4 Recommendations for geotechnical design parameters

The following geotechnical parameters are recommended for pile foundation design:
fu = net ultimate skin friction coefficient; and
qnet = net allowable end bearing capacity

The values for these design parameters are given in the table below.

6.3 Recommendations for Foundations

It is noted that 03 Nos. of rock cores have been tested. Their UCS values range from
15.31 MPa to 43.2 MPa. The average UCS value is 30.27 MPa.

Referring to Appendix 2, it is recommended to adopt a net allowable end bearing

capacity of 4.0 MPa.

Further, when designing the piles, the recommendations are as given previously in
Section 5.3; viz.

An upper value for the skin friction coefficient is provided in the reference
“Foundations on Rock” (2nd edition), by Duncan C. Willie, and “Pile Design and
Construction Practice” (5th edition), by M.J. Tomlinson; Duncan C. Willie.

Page 16 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

As per this reference, for average UCS = 30.27 MPa;

the value for τa is 0.83 MPa; i.e. 830 kN/m2.

It is recommended that
(i) A minimum of 3m of rock socketing is ensured;
(ii) (L/B) ratio for the rock socket be of the order of 2;
(iii) The allowable net end bearing capacity is 4.0 MPa for initial design;
(iv) The allowable skin friction coefficient (fa) in rock be taken as lying
between 0.2 MPa and 0.83 MPa.

It is recommended that these assumed pile design parameters be checked by carrying

out Pile Load Tests using instrumented Test Piles.

6.4 Recommendations for geotechnical design parameters

The following geotechnical parameters are recommended for pile foundation design:

fu = net ultimate skin friction coefficient; and

qnet = net allowable end bearing capacity

The values for these design parameters are given in the table below.

7.3 Recommendations for Foundations

Taking into consideration the high loads to be transferred from the 31-slab building,
it is recommended that bored and cast in-situ Reinforced Concrete pile foundations,
which are socketed in to the fresh rock be used subject to a minimum pile length of
3m.

Page 19 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

Adopting the rock quality categorization given in Section 5.3, it is noted that at
locations such as BH-18, the rock is highly fractured even over 8.0m depth.

It is noted that 04 Nos. of rock cores have been tested. Their UCS values range from
16.04 MPa to 52.68 MPa. The average UCS value is 28.53 MPa.

Referring to Appendix 2, it is recommended to adopt a net allowable end bearing

capacity of 3.77 MPa.

Further when designing the piles, the recommendations are as given previously in
Section 5.3; viz.

An upper value for the skin friction coefficient is provided in the reference
“Foundations on Rock” (2nd edition), by Duncan C. Willie, and “Pile Design and
Construction Practice” (5th edition), by M.J. Tomlinson; Duncan C. Willie.

As per this reference, for average UCS = 28.53 MPa;

the value for τa is 0.80 MPa; i.e. 800 kN/m2.

Therefore when designing the piles, it is recommended that

8.3 Recommendations for Foundations

Taking into consideration the high loads to be transferred from the 31-slab building,
it is recommended that bored and cast in-situ Reinforced Concrete pile foundations,
which are socketed in to the fresh rock be used subject to a minimum pile length of
3m.

Adopting the rock quality categorization given in Section 5.3, It is noted that at
locations such as BH-20, the rock is highly fractured even over 5.0m depth.

It is noted that 03 Nos. of rock cores have been tested. Their UCS values range from
5.06 MPa to 15.04 MPa. The average UCS value is 11.27 MPa.

Referring to Appendix 2;

It is recommended to adopt a net allowable end bearing capacity of 1.49 MPa.

Willie.

As per this reference, for average UCS = 11.27 MPa;

the value for τa is 0.50 MPa; i.e. 500 kN/m2.

Page 23 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

Further when designing the piles, it is recommended that

(i) A minimum of 3m of rock socketing is ensured;

(ii) (L/B) ratio for the rock socket be of the order of 2;

(iii) The allowable net end bearing capacity is 1.5 MPa for initial design;

(iv) The allowable skin friction coefficient (fa) in rock be taken as lying
between 0.2 MPa and 0.5 MPa.

It is recommended that these assumed pile design parameters be checked by carrying

out Pile Load Tests using instrumented Test Piles.

8.4 Recommendations for geotechnical design parameters

The following geotechnical parameters are recommended for pile foundation design:

fu = net ultimate skin friction coefficient; and

qnet = net allowable end bearing capacity

The values for these design parameters are given in the table below.

9.3 Recommendations for Foundations

It is recommended that initially the ground in the area of the proposed development
be excavated to the bottom of the proposed basement floor level; i.e. to a depth of
around -1.68 m below existing ground level, with sides of the excavation retained
with proper retaining structures.

Shallow foundations cannot be adopted for this four level structure due to the
presence of very weak organic clay and weak residual formation between the depths
of 11.1m and 19.2m; and there would be unacceptable consolidation settlement
within this layer.

Therefore, it is recommended that the foundations consist of bored and cast in-situ
Reinforced Concrete piles, which are socketed into the basement rock be used subject
to a minimum pile length of 1m.

Adopting the rock quality categorization given in Section 5.3, at this location,
Category 3 type of rock is encountered at depths of rock socket exceeding 4m.

It is noted that 03 Nos. of rock cores have been tested. Their UCS values range from
8.34 MPa to 39.43 MPa. The average UCS value is 20.36 MPa.

Page 26 of 28
Geotechnical Investigation Report Geotech (Pvt) Ltd

Referring to Appendix 2;

It is recommended to adopt a net allowable end bearing capacity of 2.69 MPa.

Willie.

As per this reference, for average UCS = 20.36 MPa;

the value for τa is 0.68 MPa; i.e. 680 kN/m2.

Further when designing the piles, it is recommended that

(i) A minimum of 1m of rock socketing is ensured;

(ii) (L/B) ratio for the rock socket be of the order of 2;
(iii) The allowable net end bearing capacity is 2.7 MPa for initial design;

(iv) The allowable skin friction coefficient (fa) in rock be taken as lying
between 0.2 MPa and 0.68 MPa.

It is recommended that these assumed pile design parameters be checked by carrying

out Pile Load Tests using instrumented Test Piles.

9.4 Recommendations for geotechnical design parameters

The following geotechnical parameters are recommended for pile foundation design:

fu = net ultimate skin friction coefficient; and

qnet = net allowable end bearing capacity

The values for these design parameters are given in the table below.

Ultimate end bearing capacity for piles in rock

For piles end bearing on rock, the ultimate carrying capacity can be related to the
RQD value and the strength of rock cores.

In Ref. 1, Tomlinson refers to the results of Kulhawy and Goodman (1980, 1987),
who had proposed an empirical equation for estimating the ultimate end bearing
capacity (qc) of socketed pile in rock as follows:

qc = 0.33 x quc for RQD = 0-70 %

In this equation, quc is the average uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores.

In Ref. 2, it is reported as follows:

“The design value of the bearing capacity of slightly and moderately weathered rock
foundations can also be calculated by the following formula, based on the saturated
uniaxial compressive strength measured in laboratory.

f = ψ . frk

where; f – design value of the bearing capacity of rock foundation (kPa);

frk – standard value of saturated uniaxial compressive strength of the rock

(kPa);

ψ - reduction coefficient, having values 0.22-0.33 for slightly weathered rock,

and 0.17-0.25 for moderately weathered rock. In the determination of its value,
spacing between structural faces in the rock mass, occurrence shape and their
combination should be emphatically taken into consideration; while stability in water
should be emphatically taken into account for weak rock.”
