15-second questions (2 points each)

Directions: All problems must be solved mentally. Anyone caught solving in any medium will have their
answer discouraged.

1. If 2a = 5, what is 4a+2 ?

2. The legs of a right triangle are 6 and 12 cm long. What is the area of the circle that circumscribes
the triangle?

3. Find the coordinates of the vertex of the parabola y = 2x2 + 4x − 3.

Directions: Scratch papers will be provided for this round. Contestants may begin solving as soon as
the question has been read.

1. The zeros of the third-degree polynomial P (x) are -2, 1, and 3. If P (−1) = 16, what is P (4)?

2. In a standard deck of playing cards, a full house is a hand of five cards consisting of 3 cards of the
same rank and a pair of cards of the same rank. How many full houses are possible?

ordinates of this point.

2. How many three digit numbers, greater than 500, have at least two of their digits the same?

Answer: 139

3. Let a1 , a2 , ... be an arithmetic sequence. If ap = q and aq = p where p < q, what is apq ?

Answer: p + q − pq

4. The points (0, 2), (0, −4), and (3, 5) lie on a circle. Find the radius of this circle.

5. Triangle ABC is isosceles with AB = BC = 12 cm. Side AC is extended to a point D such that
AC = CD. Let E be the midpoint of AB, and let DE intersect BC at F . Find CF .

6. A rectangular prism with length 12 cm, width 8 cm, and height 10 cm, was painted black and was
cut into cubes 2 cm in length, and were placed in a bag. If three cubes were randomly picked, what is the
probability that all cubes have three faces painted?
