Education in New Zealand!

To the core, New Zealand’s education system focuses on teaching students to solve problems,
absorb, analyse and apply information, to work with others to create and innovate. The system
supports debate, free thinking and flexibility, build self-esteem and self-expression skills and our
teachers encourage students to be confident, connected and actively involved, lifelong learners.

"New Zealand has great schools" "New Zealand is not crowded" "New Zealand is not too expensive"
"New Zealand is a friendly country" "New Zealand has great beaches" "New Zealand has great diving"
"New Zealand has great skiing" "New Zealand is clean and green"
Though New Zealand is same the size of Japan or Great Britain, but there are lot of reasons why one
should consider New Zealand for further study or higher education.
Some reasons from student’s perspective
 A country of open, welcoming people, a place of warmth and hospitality.
 One of the cleanest country in the world. (Great air & water quality)
 A safe place with relatively low-crime rate. (health & safety)
 English speaking country with huge Indian population
 Country known for breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty
 Tertiary education is well-known across the globe
 Students are allowed to work part time for 20 hours a week
 The adult minimum wage is NZ $16.50 per hour
 Stay back for international students is upto max 3 years*
 Immigrant friendly and student visa is a pathway to Residency*
There are 8 publicly funded Universities and 18 Polytechnics/Institute of Technology Polytechnics in
New Zealand. The post graduate education falls under the British educational system of higher education,
and they are recognized as equivalent to getting a Master’s or Doctorate degree in the United Kingdom.
Fact -- New Zealand's education system consistently ranks amongst the best in the world.
Education in New Zealand is talked in terms of Levels
 Level 7 – Bachelors – 3 years ( +2 student with IELTS of 6 bands with no band less than 5.5)
 Level 7 – Grad Diploma – 1 year (Graduation with IELTS of 6 bands with no less than 5.5)
 Level 8 – PG Diploma – 1 year (Graduation with IELTS of 6.5 bands with no less than 6)
 Level 9 – Masters – 1.5 or 2 years (Graduation with IELTS of 6.5 bands with no less than 6)
 Level 10 – PhD – 3 to 5 years (Graduation with research experience and IELTS not must)

Education Assessment -- There are tests, project works, tutorials, assignments and final exams which are
continuous assessment throughout the academic year unlike in India which is one time.

Climate: Climate is very mild and doesn’t get uncomfortably hot or cold with four distinct seasons
 Summer --- December, January , February (J,F –warmest) -- 20 to 30 degrees
 Autumn --- March, April, May
 Winter --- June, July (coldest month), August -- 10 to 15 degrees
 Spring --- September, October, November
Four seasons in a day --- warm and windy to a torrential downpour and back to sunny skies is quite usual
in New Zealand sometimes. Therefore, it is advised to pack everything when you go out.
Study…Live…Work…Settle @ New Zealand
Stage 1

We need the following documents to apply for admission to any University/ Polytechnic/PTE

 All academics – 10th, 12th, Graduation ( Provisional, Consolidated, Year wise


marksheets) and Post-graduation (if any)
 Any Vocational Training Certificates – IT Training or core training certificates like
Embedded and alike.
 Language Competency ~ IELTS 6.5 bands with no band less than 6 (or) 6 bands with no
band less than 5.5, Pearson Test of English PTE 58 overall and no band less than 50 (or)
50 overall with no sub band specification, TOEFL 79 overall with 21 in writing (or) 60
overall with 20 in writing
 Passport – 1st and last page Xerox.

Stage 2

 We will then send all the docs to the college and get you the offer letter – 4 to 5 days for
Private Colleges or 1 to 2 weeks for Polytechnics. University take 4 to 6 weeks.

Stage 3

 Once the offer letter comes the student then has to arrange the following - Funds, Annual
income proof of parents, Police Clearance Certificate & Medical Certificate
 Proof of funds – Immigration New Zealand for the purpose of student visa accepts the
following proof of funds : Education Loan fully sanctioned (non in-principle loan) by
any Nationalized Bank, Personal loan for the purpose of education, Savings account
balance of parents ( 6 months statement from recent time should be submitted and if
there is any recent cash deposits in the account – proof for source of such funds to be
submitted with the file), Fixed Deposits of parents (if they are recent made FD’s then
source for those funds to be submitted with the file), Provident Fund balance of parents,
Postal Savings like – Monthly Income Scheme MIS, National Savings Certificate NSC,
Kisan Vikas Patra KVP and Sponsorship from your immediate family (Dad’s side)
members preferably & MOM side can also sponsor.
 Annual income – Salary income (ITR’s or Form 16 for 2 years), Business Income (
Business registration certificate, ITR’s of the Business, Business PAN Card and Current
account statement of the firm), Agricultural income – Income certificate from VORO,
MRO or Mee Seva + Agricultural passbook Xerox and English translation of the same.
 Police Clearance Certificate to be registered online with Passport Seva Kendram and
collected from Passport Seva Kendra office Locally. PCC is valid for 6 months. Will
cost Rs 1000 maximum.
 Medicals/Health Check-Up – To be done at GYD Diagnostics at Padmaraonagar, Secunderabad
or Centre for Migration Medicine (CMM) Rd No 12, Banjara Hills. For one year program
duration student has to get just Chest X-Ray done which would cost Rs 1000. For programs
whose duration is more than 1 year students have to undergo full-medicals which would cost Rs
6000. Medicals are valid for 3 months only.

 If you have experience ~ Get as many documents as possible from your employer like letter of
appointment, experience cum relieving letter, salary slips, ITR or From 16, ID Xerox and any
other document that could prove your connection with your employer. The onus is on the student
and the consultant to submit all docs to the Visa Officer with Immigration New Zealand to arrive
at a positive conclusion about your employment. VO @ INZ, Mumbai should be able to cross-
verify your experience else there is very possibility of student visa being refused.

Stage 4

 Get visa forms filled – INZ 1012, INZ 1014, Supplementary Information Sheet
 Visa fee: Rs. 14,300 in favour of “Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment” payable
at Mumbai and Rs. 1,038 in favour of “TT Services” payable at Hyderabad.
 SOP – Statement of Purpose outlining – Why you want to study in New Zealand, Why X College
and GD in IT/Business program and what are your career plans after course completion. This
document is very decisive of your visa outcome.
 Covering letter on IVY Overseas Letter Head explaining the entire case to the Visa Officer.

Stage 5

 Visa application packet will be submitted at TT Services, Hyderabad and then they in turn will
send that to INZ Mumbai. It is then in a week to 10 days’ time (depends) will be allocated to a
Visa Officer.
 Depending on the docs in the visa file and the evidence of risk in the file, VO might take 2 to 4
weeks to announce a decision on your application.
 If everything is fine, they will send the agent and the student an AIP Mail (Approval in principle)
which confirms that your application to study in X college and Y program is approved upon
conditions being satisfied in 30 days’ time.
 AIP Conditions to be met: One year fee receipt + Loan disbursement letter + Extension letter
from the college, if required + FTS Receipt (this in few cases)

Stage 6

 After submitting all the AIP conditions via email to the Visa officer, they will endorse your
passport with the final visa and dispatch the same to the consultants address exactly 30 days prior
to the commencement of the program start date.

Stage 7

 Student then has to make arrangements like accommodation confirmation, shopping and flight
booking which has to be between the start date and first entry dates printed on the visa label by
INZ, Mumbai.

Student Visa (30 days + Program duration + 30/60days)

If students fail either 1 or 2 subjects, they will apply for Further


Student Visa for 3 months’ time. If they fail 3 or more than 3
courses, they can’t apply for Further Student Visa

Post Study Work Visa - OPEN (1 year/ 2years / 3 years)


($4200 funds + CCC+ INZ 1015 form + Appln Fee $300 + PCC + Medicals
Students who plan for GD program (Level 7) within Auckland are eligible for 1
year PSW Open and students studying outside Auckland are Eligible for 2 years
PSW Open. Students who graduate with either Bachelors, Level 8 or Level 9 are
eligible for 3 years Post Study Work Visa – OPEN. The best thing is that during
this period if the students finds a job relevant to this studies with an annual
salary of NZD 50,000 and scores 160 points, he/she can apply for Resident Visa
too.
 Offer of employment from the employer
 Employment Contract which is usually signed for 2 years
 INZ 113 form duly signed by the employer – Support letter
 Police clearance + Medical Certificate (INZ 1121)
 INZ 1015 form and application fee ($300 approx)
 Work visa will only be approved when the Job Offer provides the applicant practical experience relevant
to the Qualification obtained from NZ. Subject area + Level of qualification must be relevant to your
qualification and also Qualification should be the key factor to employ you in that position.

To apply for Resident Visa one has to score 100 to 160 points. During this if the student for any reason is unable to male
Level 7, 8 – 50 points, Age (202-29) – 30 points, Job offer – 50 successful shift to Resident Visa, he/she then has to be sponsored
points, Job offer outside Auckland – 30 points, Bonus points if by the employer for Essential Skill Work Visa which is only possible
your Qualification and Job Offer are listed on LTSSL – 20 points when the employer can get him Positive LMO letter from DOL.

Resident/Definite Visa (2 years)


The student in this visa will stay in New Zealand will work and then contribute to the economy of New
Zealand for 2 years by way of tax payments and spending on buying food, clothes etc and paying rent,
insurance policies and alike.
The student has to spend more than 6 months in the 1st year and
more than 6 months in the 2nd year working and contributing to the
economy of New Zealand.

Permanent Resident/ Indefinite Visa (3years)


He/She will stay for 3 years and they enjoy several benefits being a PR Holder of NZ. After staying for 5 years in
NZ on Resident Visa status (definite and indefinite including) they are eligible for

Citizenship
(At this stage India Citizens has to submit their Indian Passport to Indian Consulate Office in New Zealand and then
they will be given a book called PIO – Person of Indian Origin / OCI – Overseas Citizen of India). New Zealand
allows dual citizenship.
