Experiment: Demonstration of Charging by Conduction using an Electroscop

Aim

To demonstrate the process of charging by conduction using an electroscope.

Objective

1. To observe the behavior of an electroscope when charged by conduction.

2. To understand the principle of charge transfer during conduction.

3. To identify the effect of a charged object on the electroscope leaves.

Apparatus Required

- Electroscope

- Plastic rod (negatively charged by rubbing with wool or fur)

- Wool or fur

- Metal rod (or conductor)

- Insulating stand

- Paper for observations

Procedure

1. Set up the electroscope on an insulating stand.

2. Rub the plastic rod with wool or fur to charge it negatively.

3. Bring the charged rod close to the metal disc of the electroscope without touching it. Observe the

leaves.

4. Now touch the metal disc with the charged rod. This is the process of charging by conduction.

5. Observe the movement of the electroscope leaves.

6. Remove the charged rod and observe any changes in the leaves.

7. Discharge the electroscope by touching the metal disc with your hand and observe the leaves.

8. Record all observations carefully.

Observations

- Record the initial position of the leaves when the electroscope is neutral.

- Observe the position of the leaves when the charged rod is brought near (without touching).

- Note how the leaves move after charging by conduction.

- Observe the leaves after discharging the electroscope.

Questions to Answer

1. What happens to the leaves of the electroscope when a negatively charged rod is brought near it

(without touching)?

2. What happens to the leaves when the negatively charged rod touches the metal disc?

3. What happens to the leaves when the rod is removed after charging the electroscope by

conduction?

4. What is the charge on the leaves after charging by conduction?

5. What happens to the leaves when you touch the metal disc with your hand?

6. Why do the leaves of the electroscope repel each other when charged?

7. How does conduction transfer charge to the electroscope?

8. How can you discharge an electroscope?

9. Why does the electroscope remain charged after the charged object is removed?

10. What will happen if a positively charged object is brought close to a negatively charged

electroscope?
