(A) Design of Screw:
-Screw
(1) Find core diameter (d):
Considering the screw under pure compression, use the
to axial
formula of direct compressive stress being induced due
compressive load (W) load to calculate value of de.

subjected to
In addition to compressive stress, screw is also
torsional shear stress. To account for this, increase the value of d,
considerably by referring the standard table 4.1 of square threads,
where, we get the values of do and p.
Now, calculate new 'd.' using the formula, d, = do -p.
2. ind torque TË required to rotate the screw and hence. find the induced shear stress () due to this
torque:
d
TË = Px Wtan (a +0) x
where, P = Effort required at circumference of screw
and d = Mean
diameter of screw
We know that, torque transmitted at the circumference of screw,
T, xxd
Find out the torsional shear stress due to torque T, in the screw designed in step (1).
. Induced torsional shear stress in screw,
Cind = 16T,
Also, tind the induced direct compressive stress (G) due to axial compressive load in the screw designed in
step (1).

3. Check maximum principal stresses : When screw is simultaneously subjected to two types of stresses, i.e.
direct stres (compressive) and torsional shear stress, then design must be based on,
(a) Maximum shear stress theory, according to which, maximum shear stress induced on minimum cross
section is,
Induced Lmax
(b) Maximum normal stress theory, according to which, maximum normal stress induced on minimum cross
section is,
1 1 2
Induced oc max
Note : We can put the value of tmax calculated in previous step 3 (a) in the above expression, for easy
calculation of oe max using the following formula.
1
Oc max = Oc + Tmax
Check whether the principal stresses induced (Emax and gc ma) are less than corresponding permissible stress
values or not ? If yes, then design of screw is safe.
(B) Design of Nut :
4. Find the height of nut by considering the bearing pressure acting on it:
By considering the bearing pressure on nut, we have,
W
Pb =
do- d xn
where, n = Number of threads of screw in contact (engagement) with nut
(a) Calculate 'n' from the above equation.
(b) Calculate, Height of nut, H=nxp
(c) Calculate thickness or width of screw thread, t =.

5. Check transverse shear stresses induced in screw and nut as follows :
W
(a) Induced Transverse Shear stress for screw, Tscrew T.
dent
W
(b) Induced Transverse Shear stress for nut, Tnut = T do nt
By using the above formulae, calculate tscrew and tput and verify that, these induced stresses are less than
their permissible values.
6. Find inner diameter (D,), outer diameter (D,) and thickness (t,) of collar :
(a) Inner diameter (D) :It is found by considering tensile failure of nut.
W
Gt =
(b) Outer diameter (D) :It is found by considering crushing failure of nut colla.
W
Cck =
(c) Thickness of nut collar (ti) :It is found by considering shear failure of nut collar.

7. Fix the diameter of head (D) and diameter of pin (Da) fitted on top of screw :
By using empirical relation,we can find R3 and Ry as under.
Diameter of head = D, = 1.75 do
The cup is fitted with a pin.
Diameter of pin = D, = 4 [Put the value of calculated D3 and find out Dl
