• “If you are planning for one year – plant rice.
• If you are planning for ten years – plant trees.
• But if you are planning for 100 years – plant
people!”

• Is it Leadership or Management?
How is Leadership is Different from
Management?
• 1. Process vs. Vision
• Effective leadership is centered on a vision to guide change. (ex.
Bagong Lipunan/Marcos/ Philippines 2000 (Ramos)

• managers set out to achieve organizational goals

through implementing processes,
• such as budgeting, organizational structuring, and
staffing, leaders are more intent on thinking ahead
and capitalizing on opportunities.
• .”
2. Organizing vs. Aligning
• The manager administers;

• the leader innovates

• The manager maintains;

• the leader develops

• The manager focuses on systems and structure;

• the leader focuses on people

3. Position vs. Quality
• The title “manager” often denotes a specific role within an
organization’s hierarchy, “
• Manager is a title. It’s a role and set of responsibilities,”

• . Leadership is the result of action. If you act in a way that inspires,

encourages, or engages others, you are a leader.

• A leader may not have a title of a Manager

• And A Manager may NOT be a LEADER!
• .
• BUT The best managers are also TRUE leaders, but the two are not
synonymous.
Steve Jobs said
Management is about persuading people to
do things they do not want to do….,

while leadership is about inspiring people to

do things they never thought they could.

Steve Jobs

• as a result of the unique personalities (engineers,

manufacturers , scientists,
contractors,entrepreneurs etc )and
• technical nature of engineering.

resources)

• Output vs input
Some Important Management Terms

• Effectiveness means the capability of

producing an effect.
• (doing the "right" things)
• even if it takes a bit longer.
• It’s the strategic vision behind innovation
trends, where you’re not just running fast

Example of effectiveness
• For maximum effectiveness of
your weight loss plan,

• you need to combine exercise

with a healthy diet.
Example of Effectiveness
• An effective person or company is the

Example of effectiveness

cars. They weren’t the most efficient vehicles
