Theory Questions with Answers

Theory Question 1
Simplify:

(a) 2x + 3x - 4 + 5

(b) 3/4 + 1/2 - 1/3

Solution:
(a) Combine like terms:

2x + 3x = 5x
-4 + 5 = 1

Result: 5x + 1.

(b) Find the LCM of denominators 4, 2, and 3, which is 12. Rewrite fractions with a
denominator of 12:

3/4 = 9/12, 1/2 = 6/12, 1/3 = 4/12

Add and subtract:

9/12 + 6/12 - 4/12 = 11/12

Result: 11/12.

Theory Question 2
A school has 120 boys and 80 girls.

(a) What fraction of the students are boys?

(b) Express the number of girls as a percentage of the total population.

Solution:
Total number of students: 120 + 80 = 200.

(a) Fraction of boys:

Number of boys / Total students = 120 / 200 = 3/5

Result: 3/5.

(b) Percentage of girls:

Number of girls / Total students × 100 = 80 / 200 × 100 = 40%

Result: 40%.
Theory Question 3
The perimeter of a rectangle is 48 cm. If the length is twice the width, calculate:

(a) The length and width of the rectangle.

(b) The area of the rectangle.

Solution:
(a) Let the width = x. Then, the length = 2x.

The formula for the perimeter is:

Perimeter = 2(Length + Width)

Substitute values: 48 = 2(2x + x) = 2(3x) = 6x

Solve for x: x = 48 / 6 = 8

Width = 8 cm, Length = 2x = 2 × 8 = 16 cm.

(b) Area of a rectangle = Length × Width:

Area = 16 × 8 = 128 cm²

Result: 128 cm².
