of infrastructure

AY2024/2025 Engineering Discipline

PBL Project Brief: (For the module Construction Technology (CON4316))
Analysis and Design the Structural Form and Construction Technology of Superstructure / Substructure

PBL Project Title1

Present and evaluate the Structural Form and Construction Technology of infrastructure.

Project Overview
Through the project, students are required to integrate and apply knowledge and skills
acquired in CON4316 – Construction Technology. The students should apply the learnt
knowledge and skills to analyze the structural form and interpret their design concept.

Driving Question2
How to analyze the structural form and interpret their design concept?

Target Users

• Clients / developers
• Consultant : Architects / Engineers
• Contractors
• Construction related parties

Project Structure3
This is a group project of maximum 4 students in a group. You are required to present and
evaluate the structural form and interpret their design concept.

 In this project (EA), you are required to identify two real projects and study the following
requirements provided.
 You are requested to select any two of the following topics for your EA project with the
following requirements
1. Building has more than 5 stories height in Hong Kong
2. Bridge has span length more than 10m in Hong Kong or oversea
3. Tunnel has more than 1km long in Hong Kong or oversea

 Students are required to describe detailly on the following items and support with appropriate
photos/sketches.

1. Identify the structural forms of superstructure and substructure (if possible) and discuss
why the designer had such design idea at the design stage.
(400-500 words)
2. Identify some of the special construction technology adopted in the structure such as
precast concrete / prestressed concrete etc.
(400-500 words)

1
This Project brief should comprise 5 concepts to facilitate students’ learning in the PBL Project or module.
The 5 concepts include i) Real-world Problem-solving, i.e. the Driving Question; ii) Interdisciplinary Learning,
iii) Professional Ethics, iv) Safety Precaution and v) Assessment on the Student-led Learning. As regards
the Essential Project Design Elements of PBL, please also refer to the Gold Standard PBL at
https://www.pblworks.org/blog/gold-standard-pbl- essential-Project-design-elements
2 Components of driving question include ‘Open challenge’, ‘Who or what role’, ‘What they will have to do’,

and ‘Who or what it is for’. <PBL training by CLT 16/04/2021>

3 This part should include the learning contents and / or the relevant MILO(s) when appropriate.

You are required to submit hardcopy and present your project within 20 mins (10-15 mins
presentation and 5 mins Q & A), everyone has to present, and otherwise no mark on such area will
be given. Please refer to teaching plan for the presentation date.

Roles and Responsibilities4

Students as Active Learners managing a Student-Led Project, unlike traditional Project, you
are expected to take greater responsibilities to initiate and develop a solution corresponding
to the driving question.

General students’ responsibilities for PBL in the engineering field include:

• Find resources & apply information
• Choose and use relevant standards/ code of practice
• Make decisions on how you work and what you create
• Apply design thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, communication,
collaboration, and self-management skills where applicable
• Concern environment, safety and sustainability where applicable
• Pro-actively seek for and apply feedback
• Demonstrate your engineering competence and professional competence where
applicable
• Present your Project and deliverable publicly

Project Path and Milestones5

The Project is for the module Construction Technology in semester 1. The Project
development is divided into four stages as shown below:

4 Make reference to PBL Handbook Clause 5.1 for responsibilities. In the PBL training by CLT, roles can

include ‘Professional Role’ and ‘Project Role’

5 Teaching and assessment schedule should be included in this part. It is similar to the main table of the

Engineering Discipline teaching plan.
