RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP

In the current business environment, characterized by change and new and sometime unpredictable
challenges, it is important that leaders have the capability to act responsibly, to deliver a business which
meets those challenges without causing detriment to their stakeholders or the world in which the exist.

Responsible leaders should:

- Deliver organizational performance
- Acting sustainably
- Innovate for the longer term.

Link to stakeholder theory & strategic planning

Responsible leaders can be considered as an extension of the stakeholder theory. Stakeholder theory
refers to the need for an organization to consider multiple stakeholders, not just the shareholders, when
determining strategies and behaviors.

However, responsible leadership is so much more. There are several considerations when determining
responsible actions responsible actions, such as:
- Focus on the broader needs of others rather than personal interests
- Consider the societal and moral implications of decisions
- Ensure that decision-making is based on the long-term rather than satisfying immediate priorities at
the potential expense of future success

The reputation of the organization can increase dramatically if it is known to always behave in a
responsible way; not merely to choose areas of responsibility and to use these for marketing purposes.

Organisational Behaviour
Organisations should behave responsibly, in addition to stakeholder theory approach:
- Involving stakeholders in decision-making such as workforce comments are taken before deciding
on new overtime policy.
- Considering human and environmental impacts when making supply chain decisions. E.g.,
Reducing the use of rubber or plastic materials or purchase from suppliers with positive approaches to
human rights.
- Providing public value and addressing societal problems. E.g., sponsoring university research
programmes or fund-raising activities for charities of specific societal issue.
- Developing a socially responsible culture throughout the organisation.
- Always behave ethically

Over the long term, the organisation will develop a reputation for responsibility which will encourage existing and potential
staff, customers and communities alike. As reputation increases, more suppliers & investors will want to be involved with the
org, allowing it to be successful continuously & grow.
Responsible leadership may be considered to an extension of stakeholder theory, but the business should focus
not only on the stakeholders but on sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical behaviour in addition to
financial objectives.
