DEFINITION OF TERMINOLOGIES

PHARMACY; The art and science of practicing, preparing and dispensing drugs and medicine.

It is also a retail shop where medicine and other articles are sold

THERAPUETICS; It is a branch of medicine that is concerned specifically with the treatment

of a disease or therapy that cures disease or relieve pain or tending to cure or restore to health.

PHARMOCOLOGICALL PROPERTIES; It is the interaction that occur between a living

organism and chemicals, drugs or medicine that affect normal or abnormal biochemical functions

in the body. If properties are medicinal, they are considered pharmaceuticals, example, thiazoles

exhibit numerous pharmacological properties like antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory etc

PRESCRIBING; In medicine, it means, to order the use of (a treatment, medicine, etc.), usually

by written prescription. Example, the doctor prescribed steroids for my ear trouble

DISPENSING; To administer or bestow, as in small portions.

PHARMACEUTICAL NAMES; they are names assigned according to a scheme in which

specific syllables in the drug name convey information about the chemical structure, action, or

indication of the drug (journal of American Medical Association).

THERAPEUTIC DOSE; Dose resulting in a desired response.

MAXIMUM DOSE; the highest dose of a drug administered that does causes unacceptable side

effects, that is, the largest dose of medicine or drug consistence with safety.

LETHAL DOSE; Dose resulting in the death of an organism. It represents the dose at which

individuals are expected to die.

TOXIC DOSE; Dose at which toxicity is observed. It is the drug dose that produces a toxic

effect.

SIDE EFFECT; A secondary and usually adverse effect of a drug or medicine, for instance,

nausea, diarrhoea and headache are side effects of many medications.

ALLERGIC REACTION; It is an overreaction of the body’s immune system to specific

substances which are known as allergens. These allergens include certain foods, drugs and

medications, plants and microorganisms (Health Academy of Australia).


CONTRAINDICATION; Something (such as a symptom or condition) that makes a particular

treatment or procedure inadvisable. In medicine, it is a reason that makes it inadvisable to

prescribe a particular drug or employ a particular procedure or treatment

SENSITIVITY; The quality or state of being sensitive

TOLERANCE; The capacity of the body to endure or become less responsive to a substance

(drug or medicine) or a physiological insult especially with repeated use or exposure (Merriam-

Webster.com/dictionary/tolerance).

HABITUATION; Being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is

psychologically or physically habit-forming (especially alcohol or narcotic drugs).
