2. How do personal/internal
factors influence your career
choice?
Career:
1.) is defined as what you do for a living using your
profession or occupation that undergo education or
training to master knowledge and expertise.
2.) a combination and sequence of roles played by a
person during the course of a lifetime.
(Examples: Accountant, Engineers-Civil, Electrical, etc., Sales,
Architect, Plumber, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacist, Filmmaker,
Physician, Surgeon, Teacher-Trainer etc.)
Two terms associated to the concept of career.
1. Job - is a position an individual holds doing
specific duties. For example, a lawyer’s job is
working as an associate in a Law Firm.
2. Occupation -is defined as the similar work for
which people have similar responsibilities and for
which they develop a common set of skills and
knowledge. For example, people who are in the
mental health occupation would include
psychologists, clinical psychologists, counselors,
and psychiatrists.
Career Development Concepts
1. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory
The Social Cognitive Theory of Albert Bandura elaborates
“self-efficacy,” an individual’s characteristic where a
person performs in a certain level of work according to
his/her confidence to accomplish a task.
2. Donald Super’s Career Development Theory
His theory postulates that a person undergoes several
stages in career development. He outlines five
developmental stages that occur in the career development of
an individual.
3. Holland’s Theory of Vocational Choice
Proposed by John L. Holland, this theory emphasizes the
relationship between personality and the world of work.
What influences your decision to consider a career?
1. Interest/s- are areas that provide enjoyment and learning
which result to a feeling of reward to an individual.
2. Skills are talents or abilities that can be learned or
acquired through training or day to day experience.
3. Values are stable life goals that people have. It is an
individual belief that are honed from childhood and
throughout his life.
4. Personality/traits – innate/blended characteristics that
are evidently displayed and are important in expressing
and communicating.
