RECRUITMENT’24

ROUND 3

01

PROBLEMS FACED BY INDIA

Exponential Growth of E-Waste:

India, with its rapid digitalization and increasing consumerism,

is the third-largest generator of e-waste in the world,
producing over 3.2 million metric tons annually. A significant
proportion of this waste, including obsolete computers,
smartphones, and household appliances, is either left
uncollected or ends up in landfills, causing severe
environmental hazards
Health Hazards and Environmental Impact:

E-waste contains hazardous substances like lead, mercury,

and cadmium, which, when improperly disposed of, seep into
the soil and water, causing irreversible damage to ecosystems
and human health. Informal recycling practices often involve
open burning and acid leaching, releasing toxic fumes that
pose serious health risks to workers and nearby communities
Inefficient Collection and Recycling Infrastructure:

Despite the magnitude of e-waste generation, India’s formal e-

waste recycling capacity is underutilized. Only 10-15% of the e-
waste is processed through formal channels, while the
majority is managed by unregulated, informal recyclers who
lack the necessary technology and safety measures
Lack of Public Awareness and Engagement:

The general public has limited knowledge about the harmful

effects of e-waste and the importance of responsible disposal.
Moreover, there is a lack of convenient and accessible e-waste
collection points, discouraging consumers from participating
in recycling initiatives.

02

Regulatory Challenges and Policy Gaps:

Although India has introduced e-waste management rules,

enforcement is weak, and compliance is low among both
producers and consumers. The absence of a robust regulatory
framework and lack of incentives for formal recycling create a
challenging environment for sustainable e-waste
management.
