The Laws of

Graphic
Design
Laws of Graphic Design
There are laws for how to apply the Brand Style Guide
to the Assets you’re creating:

✓ Font - maximum number and usage

✓ Colours - consistency and conversion

✓ Imagery - quality and copyright

WORK LESS. ACHIEVE MORE.

Font
✓ Never have more than 3 fonts

✓ Choose one font for your headings and

one for the body text

✓ The simplest, most readable text

should be your body text

✓ Use hard-to-read fonts sparingly

✓ All body font should be the same size

and headings should be no more than
two sizes

Colours
✓ Never use more than 3 brand colours

✓ Always use a colour that contrasts, stands out

or “pops” for buttons (and try to use it only for
buttons)

✓ Fonts should be rarely coloured but usually

either black or white

✓ Try to use colours that contrast

Images
✓ Images should always be high quality and
never fuzzy

✓ Always use royalty-free images. Ask your

Founder for their own folder of images

✓ Find new royalty-free images at Pixabay,

Pexels and Unsplash

✓ Avoid obvious “stock photo” style images

Alignment + Spacing
✓ Ensure you have sufficient white or empty
space around the edges of your design

✓ Centre headings and left align text

✓ Don’t squash text or make it hard-to-read

small font, just to fit it on a page

✓ Be careful with a textured or “busy”

background. Use sparingly

✓ Allow for negative space to give your design

breathing room
