HSO Concerto Competition Guidelines
The Hendricks Symphony Orchestra is now accepting applications for its annual
Youth/College Concerto Competition.
College Division
1. Open to instrumental musicians enrolled in undergraduate studies in any field during
the 2024 – 2025 school year.
2. The competition is open to any Indiana residents.
Application
1. This application is due no later than 11:59 PM EDT on Friday, November 1, 2024
Audition:
1. The competition will be held in-person at Hendricks Live on Saturday, March 22, 2025.
2. There may be two in-person rounds: a preliminary and final round. Both may be
recorded for judging purposes.
3. Youth Division applicants will perform a piece of music from the ISSMA state list.
4. College Division applicants may choose any piece (that is available for the orchestra to
acquire).
5. Entrants are required to provide their own piano accompanist.
6. Entrants must provide five copies of their musical score for the judges.
Judging/winnings:
1. The results of the competition will be announced by the end of April 2025. All entrants
will receive notes from the judges. All decisions by the judges are final.
2. The HSO Youth Concerto Competition winner will receive a $500 cash prize. The
Runner-up will receive a $250 cash prize.
3. The HSO College Concerto Competition winner will receive a $1000 cash prize. The
Runner-up will receive a $500 cash prize. The judges reserve the right not to award a
winner or runner-up.
4. The winner (and runner up) may be offered the opportunity to perform live with the
orchestra during the October concert of the 2024 - 2025 season. Please contact your
band/orchestra teacher or private music teacher if you have any questions or need
help choosing appropriate music.
5. All participants will receive two tickets to the Drew Peterson concert to be performed
March 22, 2025, at Hendricks Live.
6. All participants can stay for a master class session with acclaimed young American
pianist Drew Petersen. Drew Peterson is a sought-after soloist, recitalist, and chamber
musician. He has been praised for his commanding and poetic performances of
repertoire ranging from Bach to Zaimont. He is the recipient of the 2018 Avery Fisher
Career Grant and winner of the 2017 American Pianists Awards and Christel DeHaan
Classical Fellowship.
