REVIEWER MATH
VARIABLE
- The value of the quantity remained unchanged under diff situations.

CONSTANT
- The value of quantity changes under diff situations.

4 TYPES OF VARIABLES

Direct variation ( I )

Inverse variation ( II )

Joint variation ( III )

Combined variation ( IV )

I. Direct variation

Whenever a situation produces pairs of numbers in which their ratio is constant.

Denote x and y as two quantities.

“y varies directly as x”

“y is directly proportional to x”

mathematical equation: y=kx (k is constant of variation)

(WORD PROBLEM)

the cost c varies directly as the number n of pencils can be written as? C=KN

if y varies directly as x and y=14 when x=7 find y when x=10. k=y/x, k=14/7, k=2.
y=kx, y=(2)(10), y=20.

II. INVERSE VARIATION

Occurs when a situation produces pairs of numbers whose product (multiply) is

constant.

“y varies inversely as x”

mathematical expression: y=k/x (k is constant of variation)

if y varies inversely as x and y=3 when x=4, then find y when x=16

y=k/x, 3=k/4, 3=12/4

12/16 = 3/4 lowest term

k=12

y=3/4

III. JOINED VARIATION

Happens when one quantity varies directly as the product of two or more other
quantity.

let x, y and z denote three quantities.

the statement “x varies jointly as y and z” means x=kyz or k=x/yx (k is constant of

variation)

x varies jointly as w, y and z. if x=18 when w=6 and z=5, find x when w=5, y=12
and z =3.

k=x/wyz, k=18/(2)(6)(5), k=18/60, k= 3/10 lowest term.

x=kwyz, (3/10) (5)(15)(3), x=(3/10)(180), x= 54 ⁅3 times 180 divided by 10 is equals to

54⁆

z varies jointly as x and y. if z=60 when x=3 and y=4, then find y when z=80 and
x=2.

k=z/xy, k=60/(3)(4), k=60/12, k=5.

z=kxy, 80=(5)(2)y,

80/10 =10y/10

=8 or 8=y

IV. COMBINED VARIATION

variation that involves both the direct and inverse variation.

“z varies directly as x and inversely as y”

mathematical equation: z=kx/y or k=zy

w varies directly as x and inversely as v and w and w=12 when x=4 and v=6 find w
when x=3 and v=9.

w=kx/v

k=vw/x

k=(6)(12)/ 4

k = 72/4

k=18

w=kx/v

w=(18)(3)/9

w=54/ 9

w=6

an expression with a negative exponent is the reciprocal of the same exponent with
the exponent made positive.

EX. -5^-2 = 1/5² = 1/25

EX. x^-4 = 1/x⁴

Any number raised to negative number is equal to positive.

1/3^-4 = 1/1/3⁴ = 1/1 x 3⁴/1 = 34

EX. √3 - 2√3 + 5√3

= (1-2+5) √3

= 4√3

EX. 3√6 + 9√5 - 8√6 - 3√5

3√6 - 8√6 = -5√6

-5√6 +9√5 - 3√5

9√5 - 3√5 = 6√5

= 5√6 + 6√5

EX. 4√10 - 7√7 - √10 + 10√7 +√7

4√10 - √10 = 3√10

3√10 - 7√7 + 10√7 + √7

-7√7 + 3√7 = 3√7

3√10 + 3√7 +√7
