Semley Summary
Semley Summary
Summary
At the very beginning of the story, the reader encounters a comment from an unknown
narrator about Rocannon’s own story, and then the story is framed by the commentary of the
League’s ethnologist Rocannon and the curator of its museum on the fictional planet of South
Georgia where they discuss a woman (Semley as appeared very soon in the story) and the
species of the Fomalhaut system. The story is set on a planet called Fomalhaut II and tells the
story of a young woman who lives in the Western Lands of this planet. Semley, the protagonist,
is an Angyar and this class is the highest class among other species. Although she comes from
a highborn family, she feels humiliated and discontent because of the wealthy members of her
husband’s household. She believes that if she can take back her only treasure and returns it to
her husband, then they will live a happier life in dignity. She decides to find the lost dowry of
her inheritance which is a precious necklace ‘set with one big hot-blue sapphire’ (Le Guin,
2004, p.19). Then, she sets out leaving her baby girl and husband behind. She arrives at her
family home in Kirien first and there she finds her father in the midst of ruined courts that the
Starlords destroyed. She asks her father about the necklace. He takes no notice of Semley and
sends the young woman to Fiia who are the other species living on the same planet, but they
say it may be found among the Gdemiar (They are one of the other species on the planet). And
then, she arrives at the caves where the Gdemiar dwell. They say that they manufactured it and
know where it is. Gdemiar, who are also named as Clayfolk, accept to take her to the necklace.
They say the journey ‘will last only one long night’ (p.16). Semley and four Gdemiar embark
on a journey in which she spends astonished and unconscious most of the time. They travel by
a spaceship to the museum of the League, but Semley was so unconscious that she even cannot
notice that she is on board. When they arrive at the museum, Semley meets Rocannon and the
curator of the museum and she asks for the necklace. Rocannon and the curator decide to give
back her necklace and Semley turns back to her husband’s home. However, when she arrives,
she learns that her husband has died and that her daughter has already turned 19. Although she
only experiences two days of journey, she has been away for nineteen years because of the
interplanetary time dilation. At the end of the story, Semley leaves the necklace behind and runs
into the wilderness of the eastern forest in fear and sorrow.
