Polarized glasses are designed to reduce glare from reflective surfaces, such as water, roads,

or snow, by using a special coating that blocks certain light waves. Here's an overview of how
polarized glasses are made:

1. Polarized Filter

The core feature of polarized sunglasses is a thin, vertical polarizing film. This film is
sandwiched between two layers of optical lens material (like plastic or glass). The film contains
molecules aligned in a way that only allows light waves vibrating in one direction to pass
through. Light that is reflected off horizontal surfaces tends to be polarized in a horizontal
direction, so the vertical polarizing filter blocks this type of light, reducing glare.

2. Lens Material

Polarized lenses are typically made from either plastic (such as polycarbonate or Trivex) or
glass. These materials are lightweight, durable, and offer excellent optical clarity. The lens
material is often colored or tinted for additional comfort and UV protection.

3. Manufacturing Process

● Polarizing Film Layer: The polarizing film is cut into small pieces and placed between
two layers of lens material. It’s crucial that the film is precisely aligned, as even slight
misalignment can reduce the effectiveness of the polarization.
● Lamination: The polarizing film is then laminated between the two lens layers, typically
using heat and pressure to ensure a strong bond without affecting the clarity of the
lenses.
● Cutting and Shaping: After the polarizing film is laminated, the lens blanks are cut to
the desired shape using precision machines. This is done to fit specific frames and
styles, including curved lenses for different kinds of glasses.
● UV Protection Coating: Many polarized lenses also have coatings that provide UV
protection, often applied during the same process to ensure that harmful ultraviolet rays
are blocked from reaching the eyes.

4. Final Touches

● Tinting and Coatings: Polarized lenses may also be tinted to reduce overall light
transmission, enhance contrast, or for aesthetic purposes. Coatings such as
anti-scratch, anti-reflective, or hydrophobic (water-repelling) may also be applied to
improve the durability and functionality of the lenses.
● Frame Assembly: Once the lenses are finished, they are inserted into the frames,
completing the sunglasses.

5. Testing
The final product is tested for quality assurance to ensure that the polarization is effective and
that the lenses meet optical standards for clarity, UV protection, and durability.

Polarized glasses are particularly popular for outdoor activities like fishing, boating, skiing, and
driving, where reducing glare is crucial for improved vision and safety.
