TOPIC: THE THIRTY-NINE ARTICLES OF THE ANGLICAN FAITH (31 – 39)

BY REV’D M. R. ABERE

INTRODUCTION:
The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion or Faith are historically defining statements
of doctrines and practices of the church of England; for which the church o f
Nigeria Anglican Communion was part and parcel earlier but now, no longer part
of England nor under the Church of England. The Anglican Church in Nigeria,
however, still believes and upholds the thirty-nine Articles of Religion as they are.

These Articles attempt to expand on the teaching of the creeds and give a more
detailed study of what the Bible says about God.

The thirty-nine Articles are usually printed at the back page of the Book of
Common Prayer as a constant reminder of Anglican beliefs and practices. The
essence of the thirty-nine Articles was to clarify some doctrinal issues emanating
from the English reformation by way of defining the doctrines that were in
consonance with Scripture, while denouncing every teaching and learning
towards heresy. It clearly distinguishes Anglicanism from Roman Catholicism.

ARTICLE 31: THE ONE OBLATION OF CHRIST FINISHED UPON THE CROSS.
The offering of Christ once made is that perfect redemption, propitiation, and
satisfaction for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual; and there
is no other satisfaction for sin, but that alone.

ARTICLE 32: THE MARRIAGE OF PRIEST:

Bishops, Priests, and Deacons, are not commanded by God's Law, either to vow
the estate of single life, or to abstain from marriage: therefore it is lawful for them,
as for all other Christian people, to marry at their own discretion as they shall
judge the same to serve better to godliness.

ARTICLE 33: EXCOMMUNICATED PERSONS; HOW THEY ARE TO BE AVOIDED

The person which by open denunciation of the Church is rightly cut off from the
unity of the Church, and excommunicated, ought to be taken of the whole
multitude of the faithful, as an Heathen and Publican, until he be openly
reconciled by act of repentance (penance), and received into the Church by a
Judge that has authority thereunto.
ARTICLE 34: THE TRADITION OF THE CHURCH
It is not necessary that Tradition and Ceremonies be in all places, such that do
not break the Tradition of the Church. Anyone who disobeys the church
authorities ought to be rebuked openly so that others may fear to do likewise.

ARTICLE 35: THE HOMILIES.

The Second Book of Homilies, and the former Book of Homilies were joined under
this Articles as containing a godly and wholesome Doctrine and necessary to be
read in churches by the Ministers diligently and distinctly that people may
understand. There are 21 topics identified as Homilies in this Article in the Book
of Common Prayer refers.

ARTICLE 36: CONSECRATION OF BISHOPS AND MINISTERS

The Book of Consecration of Archbishop and Bishops and Ordering of Priests
and Deacons lately set forth in the time of Edward the Sixth and confirmed by
authority of parliament, doth contain all things necessary to such Consecration
and Ordering neither hath it any thing, that of itself is superstitious and ungodly.
And therefore whoever are consecrated or ordered according to the same Rites,
we decree all such to be rightly, orderly, and lawfully consecrated and ordered.

ARTICLE 37: THE CIVIL MAGISTRATES.

The King’s Majesty hath the Chief Power in this Realm of England and other his
Dominions unto whom the Chief Governor of all Estates of his Realm, whether
they be Ecclesiastical or Civil, in all causes does appertain and is not, nor ought
to be subject to any foreign jurisdiction. The Bishop of Rome has no jurisdiction
in this Realm of England. The Laws of the Realm may punish Christian people
with death, for heinous and grievous offences. It is lawful for Christian men at the
commandment of the Nation to wear weapons and serve in the wars.

ARTICLE 38: CHRISTIAN MEN’S GOODS, WHICH ARE NOT COMMON

The riches and Goods of Christians are not common, as touching the right,
title, and possession of the same, as certain Anabaptists do falsely boast;
notwithstanding, every Christian ought, of such things as possessed,
liberally to give alms to the poor, according to his ability.

ARTICLE 39: CHRISTIAN PEOPLES’S OATH

As we confess that vain and rash swearing is forbidden Christian people by
our Lord Jesus Christ, and James his Apostle, so we judge that Christian
religion does not prohibit, but that a man may swear when the magistrate
requires in a cause of faith and charity, so it be done according to the
Prophet’s teaching in justice, judgement, and truth
